Men's and Women's Tennis Falls in Opening Day in Florida

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (3/19/25) - The Franklin Pierce men's and women's tennis teams both suffered 6-1 defeats on Wednesday afternoon against Eckerd College at the Bullard Courts in Florida. 

Women's Match

  • The Franklin Pierce women's tennis team (5-6) struggled against a strong Eckerd squad (8-5), dropping the doubles point and five of six singles matches.
  • Eckerd's top duo of Olivia Lindestaf and Fiona Orza shut out the Ravens' pairing of Zoe Asterio-Correa and Victoria Azcona 6-0 to set the tone for doubles play. Kylie Misdorp and Maya Soligo secured the doubles point for the Tritons with a 6-1 win over Paz Diaz Florentin and Gabriela Yamate. Franklin Pierce's lone doubles victory came at the No. 3 spot, where Polina Georgieva and Ana Munoz edged out Maialen Idiakez and Laura Ullrich 7-5.
  • In singles, Lindestaf dominated at the top spot, blanking Georgieva 6-0, 6-0. Misdorp followed with a strong 6-1, 6-0 performance against Asterio-Correa at No. 2. Orza sealed the victory for Eckerd, taking down Yamate 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3. Franklin Pierce's lone singles win came from Victoria Azcona, who battled past Soligo 7-5, 6-2 at No. 4.

Men's Match

  • The Franklin Pierce men's tennis team (4-3) faced a similar fate against Eckerd (9-4), dropping the doubles point and falling in five of six singles matches.
  • Eckerd swept the doubles matches, with Batu Ataseven and Mario Kirkov defeating Joe Herin and Noe Martin 6-4 at No. 1, while Adrian Gheorghe and Marshall Hulett clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win over Ralph Hiebel and Alejandro Ortiz at No. 2. Eric Asakura and Lukas Palla closed out doubles with a 6-3 win over Hugo Diaz Avila and Orlando Guerrero at No. 3.
  • In singles play, Franklin Pierce's lone victory came from Ralph Hiebel, who secured a three-set win over Asakura (6-2, 4-6, 6-4) at No. 3. Ortiz put up a strong fight but fell in three sets at No. 4 to Hulett (6-3, 1-6, 6-4). Noe Martin came close in a back-and-forth match at No. 2 but ultimately fell to Kirkov (5-7, 6-0, 7-5).
