Men’s Tennis Swept at Brandeis, 9-0

WEYMOUTH, Mass. (February 18, 2022) -- The Franklin Pierce University men's tennis team opened the spring portion of its season with a 9-0, non-conference loss against Brandeis on Friday afternoon. The match was contested at Weymouth Tennis Club.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 3-1 on the season, while Brandeis improves to 2-0.

Brandeis opened with wins in each of the three doubles matches to stake out a 3-0 lead. Franklin Pierce put up solid fights at both first and third doubles. At first doubles, sophomore Ivan Bernal (Madrid, Spain) and graduate student Kevin Denecheau (Artigueloutan, France) suffered an 8-4 defeat at the hands of seniors Jeffrey Chen and Adam Tzeng. It was an identical, 8-4 score line at third doubles, where graduate student Felipe Carvalho (Sao Paolo, Brazil) and senior Preston Gordon (Essex Junction, Vt.) were doubled up by junior Hunter Levine and senior Colt Tegtmeier.

Brandeis only dropped one set while taking all six singles matches as well, to finish off the shutout. At second singles, Bernal took the first set off of Chen, but the latter rallied for a 2-6, 6-3, 10-5 victory. At first singles, Carvalho forced a second-set tiebreak, but suffered a 6-3, 7-6 (4) defeat to Tzeng.

The Ravens are right back in action on Sunday, when they meet Babson for a non-conference match at 1 p.m. at Kingsbury Club in Medfield, Mass.
