Men’s Tennis Shuts Out Saint Michael’s, 7-0

COLCHESTER, Vt. (April 20, 2021) – The Franklin Pierce University men's tennis team hit the road on Tuesday to open up the final week of regular-season play with a trip to Saint Michael's. The Ravens came away with a 7-0 sweep, highlighted by a pair of 6-0 shutouts in doubles play.

With the win in Northeast-10 Conference play, Franklin Pierce improved to 4-1 (4-1 NE10), while Saint Michael's fell to 0-8 (0-8 NE10).

Seniors Yuval Barak (Zicron Ya'akov, Israel) and Nkrumah Patrick (Tunapuna, Trinidad and Tobago) got the day started with a 6-0 shutout in the third doubles match, over sophomores Luke Ramsay and Jack Gunning. The second doubles match ended the same, with graduate student Kevin Denecheau (Artigueloutan, France) and freshman Ivan Bernal (Madrid, Spain) shutting out their opponents, sophomores Connor Scott and Tyler Whitney. Saint Michael's sophomores Josh Weiss and Jason Boucher defeated graduate student Felipe Carvalho (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and sophomore Alejandro Ortiz (Madrid, Spain), 7-6 (5), in the first doubles spot, but Franklin Pierce still came away with the doubles point.

On the singles side, sophomore Joel Cladera (Palma de Mallorca, Spain) defeated Whitney, 6-1, 6-1, in the fourth spot. Bernal followed up with a win of his own in the third spot, 6-2, 6-4, over Scott, and Barak rounded out the first half of the singles matches in the fifth spot, with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Ramsay. Barak's victory was the one which locked up the team match for the Ravens.

In the sixth singles spot, Patrick shutout Gunning, 6-0, 6-0. In the second spot, Denecheau came from behind to earn a victory against Boucher in three sets, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. Carvalho finished things up in the first singles spot, where he defeated Weiss, 6-3, 7-6 (1).

The Ravens are scheduled to wrap up the regular season on Thursday, April 22, when they will meet Bentley at Longfellow New Hampshire Tennis & Swim Club in Nashua, N.H., for a noon start.
