Men’s Tennis Shutout at Queens (N.Y.), 9-0

QUEENS, N.Y. (February 23, 2018) – The Franklin Pierce University men's tennis team opened the spring portion of its season on the road on Friday afternoon, where they dropped a 9-0 decision to Queens (N.Y.) in non-conference play.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 3-2, while Queens improves to 6-0.

The most competitive match of the day came at first singles, where Franklin Pierce junior James Bisazza (West Barnstable, Mass.) locked horns with Queens senior Gabriel Mendez. The two traded the first two sets, with Mendez opening with a 6-2 win, before Bisazza answered with a 6-2 triumph of his own. Thus, the tiebreaker set was necessary to decide the match, with Mendez squeaking out a 10-8 win to post the 6-2, 2-6, 10-8 victory in the match.

Freshman Roberto Chong (Puigpunyent, Spain) was also competitive for the Ravens. Though he was felled in straight sets, he forced both sets to a tiebreak. Ultimately, it was a 7-6 (5), 7-6 (2) victory for Queens senior Roman Laga.

Chong teamed with sophomore Yuval Barak (Zicron Ya'akov, Israel) to provide Franklin Pierce's best doubles result of the day. The duo was bested by juniors Jose Zurro and Richard Sec, 8-6.

In all, three different Queens players doubled up with wins in both singles and doubles play on Friday: Mendez, Sec and senior Lucas Martinez.

The Ravens return to the court on Sunday, Feb. 25, when they return to New York to pay a visit to Concordia (N.Y.) at 2 p.m.
