Men's Soccer Sprints Into Playoffs With 3-0 Win Over Adelphi

RINDGE, N.H (10/25/2022) - The 2022 season was one for the history books for the top-ranked Franklin Pierce men's soccer team as they completed their regular season at Sodexo Field against the Adelphi University Panthers on Saturday evening. Following a defensive battle in the first half, the Ravens connected for three goals in the second half to power their way to a 3-0 victory over the Panthers.

Franklin Pierce completes the regular season 17-0-1 (10-0-1 NE10) following the win, posting their ninth straight shutout while remaining unscored upon in the month of October. The Ravens also remain atop the NE10 standings, holding steady as the No.1 seed in the upcoming NE10 Championship Tournament. Adelphi falls to 8-4-4 (5-4-2 NE10) with the loss and drop to the No.6 seed in the NE10.

Through the first half, the Ravens outshot the Panthers 6-1. Both the Ravens and the Panthers had multiple opportunities to score, but both also kept the other at bay with stellar defensive play. At the mid-way point of the half, the Panthers appeared to have finally put one past the Raven defense, but had the goal waved due to contact with Ravens goalkeeper Kosta Maniatis (Montreal, Quebec) hand. Both teams would head into the half scoreless, as each also committed five fouls.

It did not take long for the Ravens to break the ice in the second half, as Miguel Angel Pastor Gutierrez (Valencia, Spain) claimed the matches first goal with his third of the season on a cross pass from Vicente Valor Martinez (San Juan, Spain) just 50 seconds in. As time passed, graduate Marc Lopez (Valencia, Spain) found himself taken down from behind within the box and was awarded a penalty kick in the 73rd minute. Despite not scoring on the initial kick, the Raven midfielder followed up on his own rebound with his seventh goal of the season, expanding the lead to 2-0 Ravens.

In the 81st minute, senior forward Younes Addar (Castellon, Spain) picked up his tenth goal of the season off of a great feed from Braudilio Rodrigues (Lisbon, Portugal), who recoeved a prior pass from defender Rodrigo Parafita (Cerceda, Spain). The second half also included a slew of yellow cards from both teams, as the Panthers were the subject of two red cards.

The Ravens have not lost at Sodexo Field since October 23rd of 2018, and have a record of 33-0-1 over their last 34 home games. This is the first ever undefeated season for the Ravens in program history.

Franklin Pierce goalkeeper Kosta Maniatis picked up his tenth shutout of the season, tying his career season high from the 2021-22 campaign. In the effort, Maniatis made one save for the win while finishing the year with a program best single season goals-against average in a single season of 0.22, passing former Franklin Pierce College goalkeeper James Thrope (2006) who had a 0.39 average.

The Northeast-10 Conference playoffs open on Saturday as the Ravens will face Bentley University in the Quarterfinal round at Sodexo Field, with kickoff under the lights at 7 p.m.
