EASTON, Mass. (October 23, 2021) – The No. 1 nationally-ranked Franklin Pierce University men's soccer team faced its first loss of the 2021-22 season after falling 1-0 to Northeast-10 rival Stonehill College on Saturday morning at Skyhawk Field.

The Ravens move to 14-1-0 (9-1-0 NE10) with the loss, while the Skyhawks improve to 6-7-1 (3-5-1 NE10). The shutout loss also marks the first time Franklin Pierce has been held without a goal all season.

The Crimson and Grey started things off strong with two back-to-back shots in the first six minute of the match. Graduate students Aaron Acevedo Artes (Valencia, Spain) and Miguel Angel Pastor Gutierrez (Valencia, Spain) both tried to take shots into the bottom left of the net, trying to beat the keeper, but the attempts were saved by Stonehill's Andrew Hammersley.

The second half was much of the same as Franklin Pierce and Stonehill traded a few shots back and forth, all saved by each teams' respective goalkeeper. At the end of regulation, the Ravens and Skyhawks were at a 0-0 draw, forcing an overtime.

Freshman Vicente Valor Martinez (San Juan, Spain) recorded the only shot of the first overtime, unable to send the ball past Stonehill's Hammersley, making a second overtime necessary. In the second overtime, a loose ball on the left side off the kickoff allowed for Jacob Woznicki of Stonehill to score for the Skyhawks from 14 yards out to the lower right corner of the cage at the 100:26 mark of the game.

Junior goalkeeper Kosta Maniatis (Montreal, Quebec) registered the loss and moved to 11-1-0 on the year. Maniatis played the full 100:26 minutes of the match, making two saves on three shots faced. Hammersley of Stonehill picked up the win improving to 5-7-1 this season, stopping all five shots he faced.

Franklin Pierce outshot Stonehill 15-5, while Angel Pastor Gutierrez matched his career best with four shots, including two on target. FPU also totaled eight corner kicks.

The Ravens play host to St. Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday, October 27, for a non-conference match at Sodexo Field. The contest is slated for a 6 p.m. start.
