#5 Men's Soccer Picks Up Seventh-Straight Win with 2-0 Triumph at Saint Rose
Hay's second-half goal gives him four the season, which is tied for the team lead in tallies
ALBANY, N.Y. (October 9, 2010) -- The No. 5-nationally
ranked Franklin Pierce University men's soccer team picked up its
seventh-straight win on Saturday with a 2-0 triumph over Saint Rose
in Albany, N.Y. The Ravens ran their record to 9-1 overall and 7-0
in the Northeast-10, while the Golden Knights fell to 1-9-1 and 0-8
in league play.
The Ravens got goals from graduate back Jeff Hay (Dudley,
Mass.) and junior midfielder Diego Tabares
(Seekonk, Mass.), as both tallies were assisted by junior
midfielder Paul Latif (Newcastle, England).
Tabares got the scoring started in the 21st minute as he collected
Latif's crossing pass from the right side, made one dribble to the
left, and blasted a strike that beat Saint Rose goalkeeper Patrik
Ohlsson. It was Tabares' third goal of the season as the tally gave
him eight points for the year, which moved him into a tie for
second on team in total points.
Hay's goal in the 70th minute, not only gave Franklin Pierce a 2-0
advantage, it also gave him four for the season which moved him
into a three-way tie for the team lead in goals. Latif, one of the
three players with four tallies this season, helped Hay move into
the three-way tie as he sent a high pass towards the net, which
allowed Hay to get a header on the ball that was lofted over the
outstreched hands of Ohlsson. It was the second-straight match that
Hay scored a goal, and the tally also gave him eight points for the
year to move into a tie for second on the squad in total
points.
Latif's two assists gave him 15 points for the season, which is
tops on the team. He has also factored into the game-winning goal
in all seven matches during Franklin Pierce's impressive winning
streak.
Franklin Pierce recorded 20 shots, including putting eight on
goal. Latif posted a team-best seven shots, while junior back
Tom Reilly (Wallasey, England) and Tabares
followed with four and three, respectively.
Not to be overshadowed by the strong offensive play, Franklin
Pierce's backs turned in a spectacular effort by allowing Saint
Rose to record just one shot. Junior goalkeeper Vinny
Papageorgiou (Wilmington, Mass.) needed to make just one
save to earn the win and run his record to 9-1 on the season. It
was his third-consecutive shutout win and his sixth overall this
season.
The road win comes on the heels of a successful four-match
homestand for the Ravens, which saw the team down some of the top
programs in the region and country, including Le Moyne, Merrimack
and Southern Connecticut State.
Franklin Pierce will return home Tuesday night when the Ravens
play host to Bentley at 7 p.m. in Sodexo Field.
