De La Torre Leads Molloy over Bentley, 2-1, In Overtime At Franklin Pierce Labor Day Classic

Golden goal comes 21 seconds into second overtime

RINDGE, N.H. (September 4, 2009) – Freshman forward Tyler De La Torre scored the golden goal 21 seconds into the second overtime to give Molloy a 2-1 victory over Bentley in non-conference play at the Franklin Pierce Labor Day Classic, hosted by Franklin Pierce University, at Sodexo Field. Freshman forward Brennan DaCosta scored the lone goal of the game for Bentley.

After a scoreless first half, the two teams traded goals just 23 seconds apart in the 62nd and 63rd minutes. First, in the 62nd minute, Molloy senior forward John-Paul Hughes took a pass from junior forward Mike Adamcewicz just at the top of the right side of the penalty area and uncorked a shot which beat Bentley senior goalkeeper Michael Nikiforov to the far side to break the ice. Just moments later, Bentley sophomore midfielder Eric Heuze served a cross into the box from the right side which DaCosta finished off for his second goal of the season.

After the remainder of the second half and the first overtime period went scoreless, Molloy struck for the game-winning goal just 21 seconds into the second overtime session. Senior midfielder Jose Batista served a cross from the right side that fell right to De La Torre at the top of the six-yard box. De La Torre knocked it home for his third goal of the season to end the match.

Sophomore goalkeeper Carlos Barros made three saves on four shots to earn the victory (2-0-1) in net for Molloy, while Nikiforov stopped nine of 11 shots while taking the loss (2-1-0) in front of the cage for Bentley.

Molloy enjoyed a 20-12 shots advantage in the contest and attempted two corner kicks to Bentley’s one.

The Franklin Pierce Labor Day Classic continues later Friday when Franklin Pierce hosts Bridgeport at 7 p.m. On Sunday, in the second day of the event, Bentley and Bridgeport will square off at 4 p.m., followed by Franklin Pierce and Molloy at 7 p.m.
