WALTHAM, Mass. (March 19, 2016) -- Freshman midfielder Jake Castorf (Holbrook, N.Y.) had a hat trick on Saturday afternoon, but it was not enough for the Franklin Pierce University men's lacrosse team to catch Bentley, which poured in four goals in the third quarter. The Ravens ultimately fell in the Northeast-10 Conference match-up, 11-8.

The Ravens record falls to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the Conference with the loss, while Bentley advances to 2-1 overall 1-0 in the NE-10.

The winning goalie was senior Daniel Shaughnessy, who faced 17 shots and made nine saves on the day, with his record now standing at 2-1. The Ravens keeper, sophomore Connor Wacksman (Guilderland, N.Y.), saw his record fall to 2-1, after saving 11 of the 22 shots he faced.

Bentley started the scoring in the first two minutes, before sophomore midfielder Ben Lassow (Mansfield, Conn.) scored a man-up goal for the Ravens, with just over five minutes left in the first quarter to tie the game, 1-1. The Falcons answered with two more goals before the first quarter would end, for a 3-1 lead.

It would be a slow second quarter, and Castorf recorded two goals to cut into the deficit, but Bentley freshman Alex Astarita provided the lone goal for the Falcons, who kept the advantage going into the second half, 4-3.

As the second half got underway, Bentley tallied four consecutive goals in the first eight minutes to open up an 8-3 lead. Castorf and sophomore attackman Jake Carney (Dunbarton, N.H.) connected for back-to-back goals, but one final Falcon goal in the final second of the third left Franklin Pierce trailing by four, 9-5.

In the final quarter, the Ravens put together three back-to-back goals, with sophomore midfielder Sean Delea (Hampstead, N.H.) recording two goals, one with a man-advantage, and senior attack Casey Burnett (Windham, N.H.) got a shot past Shaughnessy as well. However, the final-quarter efforts were not enough to come back, as the Ravens fell, 11-8, on the road.

The Ravens were led Saturday by Castorf with three goals and Delea with two, while Burnett recorded three assists on the day. Sophomore midfielder Brad Chapdelaine (Fitchburg, Mass.) and Carney both collected three ground balls, while sophomore midfielder Louis Palumbo (Commack, N.Y.) won just five of 21 faceoffs. The team totaled 27 shots, collected 19 ground balls and went 83% (15-18) in clears.

Bentley was led by Astarita and junior John Wheeler, each with three goals, while Brady Palmer collected 10 ground balls, with Palmer also winning 17 of 22 faceoffs. The team took 37 shots, snagged 38 ground balls and made 12 of 13 clears successfully.

Franklin Pierce returns home to play host to American International on March 26 at noon on Sodexo Field.
