#4 Merrimack Tops Franklin Pierce, 13-3

RINDGE, N.H. (April 25, 2009) - Merrimack College, ranked fourth in this week's USILA Division II poll, posted a 13-3 victory over Franklin Pierce University in Northeast-10 Conference men's lacrosse action and the regular season finale for both at Sodexo Field this afternoon.

Senior Greg Rogowski (Cohoes, N.Y./CBA) led Merrimack to its fifth-straight win with three goals, including his 50th of the season. Juniors Bryan MacPhie (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) and Sean Lavin (North Easton, Mass./Kimball Union) and sophomore Kevin Laplante (Sebattus, Maine/Oak Hills) each added two goals and an assist for three points. Freshman Brad McAdam (Neshanic Station, N.J./Immaculata) chipped in with a goal and two assists.

Seniors Jason Flanigan (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) and Ryan Boller (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) each recorded points in their final collegiate games for Franklin Pierce. Flanigan netted a goal, his team-leading seven man-up marker of the year, assisted by Boller 4:54 into the third quarter. Junior Spencer Murray (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) and sophomore Jonathan Martinez (Waterbury Center, Vt./Rice Memorial) also netted goals for the Ravens.


Sophomore Shea Campbell made 14 saves and collected a game-high 11 ground balls this afternoon.

Junior Cory Spinale (Wakefield, Mass./Governor Academy) earned the win in goal for Merrimack with seven saves over the first 30 minutes before giving way to classmate Matt Austin (Upperbrookville, N.Y./St. Dominic) and sophomore Dave Roberto (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) for the third and fourth quarters, respectively. Sophomore Shea Campbell (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) went the full 60-minutes in goal for Franklin Pierce and finished with 14 stops, including nine in the second half. Campbell also collected a game-high 11 ground balls and caused two turnovers.

Merrimack posted a 42-20 advantage for shots in the game, but Franklin Pierce committed one less turnover (39-38). The Warriors won 14-of-18 face offs in the game and converted on 2-of-4 man-up situations, compared to 1-for-4 for the Ravens with a man advantage.

Merrimack outscored Franklin Pierce 5-0 in the first quarter, netting the first six goals of the game to take control. Rogowski scored three straight goals in a five-minute span to put the Warriors up 4-0 with 8:42 left in the opening quarter. McAdam assisted on two of Merrimack's first six markers, including the sixth by freshman

Murray put Franklin Pierce on the board with 4:52 left in the second quarter, but Merrimack closed out the first half scoring with a MacPhie goal with 40-seconds left. After Flanigan's goal pulled the Ravens back within five goals (7-2) with 11:06 left in the third quarter, Merrimack iced the win by scoring six of the last seven goals in the match.

Franklin Pierce concludes its 2009 season with a 1-11 record overall, including a 1-8 clip in the Northeast-10. Merrimack (13-1, 8-1 NE-10) heads into the Northeast-10 Tournament as the No. 2 seed, earning a first round bye and will face the winner of Tuesday's opening round matchup between third-seeded Bentley University and sixth-seeded Southern New Hampshire University.
