Bio

Drew Michals enters his first season as an assistant coach with the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team in 2020-21.

Michals makes his collegiate coaching debut with the Ravens, but did come to Franklin Pierce with coaching experience at other levels. His move to Franklin Pierce did not even necessitate a change in home rink, as he spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach with the boy's varsity team at The Winchendon School in 2018-19 and 2019-20. Michals also has head coaching experience at the midget hockey level, as he spent four years (2016-20) at the helm of the U16 and U18 squads for the Neponset Valley River Rats. He also spent five years (2015-20) working with Woburn, Mass.-based Stop It Goaltending.

Michals spent his undergraduate days minding the net at UMass Dartmouth, where he appeared in 78 games, including 74 starts, over three seasons with the Corsairs. Over nearly 4500 minutes in the crease, he posted a .904 save percentage and a 3.57 goals-against average, on the way to a 32-36-7 career record with two shutouts. Michals was at his best in his junior season of 2016-17, when he posted a .917 save percentage and 3.35 GAA over 24 starts, en route to a 15-9-0 record and All-MASCAC First Team honors, as part of a 17-win campaign for the Corsairs. He earned MASCAC All-Academic honors as a sophomore in 2015-16.

Originally from Newton, Mass., Michals is a 2018 graduate of UMass Dartmouth, with a bachelor's degree in psychology. He is pursuing his master's degree in leadership at Franklin Pierce.
