Hockey Falls in Season Opener to Westfield, 5-3

WESTFIELD, Mass. (11/01/24) - The Franklin Pierce men's ice hockey team opened their 2024-2025 season at the Western Massachusetts Invitational, hosted by Westfield State University, Friday evening. The Ravens took on the hosts of the tournament and fell in the opening round 5-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

  • Mario Paganini (Harrison, N.Y.) would earn his first career goal and give the Ravens a 1-0 lead in the 6th minute.  

  • Westfield scored a pair of first period goals from Louis Oullette to lead 2-1 after one period.  

  • Franklin Pierce tied the game at 2-2 on Paganini's second goal of the day just 58 seconds into the second period, but neither team could manage another point before the second intermission.  

  • Westfield got right to work in the third period, scoring a breakaway goal to grab a 3-2 lead at the 8:58 mark. The Owls extended the lead to 4-2 when Julian Boisclair scored with 7:45 left in the game.  

  • The Ravens kept it tight as Matthew Frett (Cherry Hill, N.J.) tallied on a rebound from the slot with 2:51 left to trim the lead back to 4-3 to earn his first goal of his career.

  • The owls took advantage of the Ravens' empty net and slid the puck towards the back of the net with 22 seconds left to take the 5-3 final for Westfield.  

INSIDE THE LINES:  

  • The Ravens had 30 shots on goal to the Owls' 39.  

  • Both teams failed to convert on the power play, with the Ravens going 0-5 and the Owls going 0 for 6.  

  • Freshman goaltender Jeffrey Reda (Larchmont, N.Y.) made 34 saves on the night in his career debut.  

  • Freshmen Paganini and Frett each earned their first goals of their collegiate career. 

UP NEXT FOR THE RAVENS: The Ravens will play Arcadia (Pa.) in the consolation game tomorrow. The puck drop is set for 4:35 PM at Amelia Park Arena in Westfield.
