Men's Hockey Season Ends with 5-0 Loss to Saint Anselm in NE10 Semifinal

Manchester, N.H. (2/25/23) - The Franklin Pierce men's ice hockey team's season came to a close on Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Arena, where they fell in shutout fashion to the Saint Anselm College Hawks in the Northeast-10 Semifinal round by a 5-0 score.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce ends the season with a 11-20-2 (7-11-2 NE-10) overall record. With the win, Saint Anselm improves to 20-10-3 (13-5-2 NE-10), and advances to the NE10 Championship with the home victory.

The Hawks didn't waste any time getting on the scoresheet in the opening period. After a failed breakout attempt by the Ravens, forward Andrew Andary swooped in on a loose puck to keep the play alive in the attacking zone, before feeding a pass to Tommy Schwartz who sent a backhander in on Raven starter Kyle Martin (Westford, Mass.). Following a pad save by Martin, the rebound kicked free to Matt Hayes who potted it for the evening's opening goal just 3:21 into the period, giving the Hawks the 1-0 edge.

The score remained 1-0 as both teams headed into the locker rooms for the second period. However, the Raven situation did not overly improve in the second period, as they continued to struggle containing the Hawks in the second frame. At 11:29, Andrew Andary cashed in on a power play, adding on to the Hawks lead with a wrister from the top of the right circle that squeaked its way through Kyle Martin, bringing the score to 2-0 Saint Anselm. Matt Hayes and Jack Murphy each assisted on Andary's power play goal. Shortly thereafter, the Hawks added another to make it a 3-0 game, as Andary threaded a pass to Garrett Alberti, who kicked the puck to his forehand and shoveled it past Martin.

With twenty minutes left in the Ravens season, they were unable to complete the comeback to keep their season alive. Liam Lyons and Matt Hayes each scored empty net goals for the Hawks to put the game on ice, punching their ticket to the NE10 championship with a 5-0 victory.

Several Ravens played their final game with the program in the loss, including Conor Foley (Nahant, Mass.), Anthony Nikolopoulos (Burlington, Mass.), Chris Stevenson (Arvada, Colo.), and Kyle Martin.

Martin suffered the loss in net for the Ravens (10-11-2), stopping 45-of-48 shots he faced. Nick Howard earned the win for the Hawks (17-9-3), turning aside all 33 shots he faced to earn the shutout.
