Late Third-Period Goal for Post University Forces 3-3 Tie for Men’s Hockey

SHELTON, Conn. (2/11/23)- The Franklin Pierce men's hockey team looked for the weekend sweep of the Post University Eagles on Saturday afternoon, but were forced to settle for a 3-3 draw in Northeast-10 Conference play at the Sports Center of Connecticut.

With the tie, the Ravens move to 10-17-2 (7-9-2 NE10), while the Eagles move to 6-18-2 (4-12-2 NE10).

The Ravens opened the scoring in the first period on the power play, when an initial shot from the middle of the zone by freshman Matt Horan (Methuen, Mass.) made contact with the stick of junior Cody Rumsey (York, Pa.), producing a rebound for graduate Chris Stevenson (Arvada, Colo.). Stevenson then put home the rebound past Eagle's netminder Zach Richards for his 10th goal of the season mid-way through the opening frame. The Ravens went into the locker room with the 1-0 lead after the first period.

The Eagles scored the equalizer 4:39 into the second period, when Connor Barter corralled a loose puck directly following a faceoff loss, and ripped a shot past the blocker side of Kyle Martin (Westford, Mass.).  However, the Ravens were able to respond once more at the midway point of the period, when Matt Horan fed a beautiful behind the back pass to Devin Rohrich (Pittsburgh, Pa.)  for an easy tap-in finish, once again capitalizing on the power play. For Rohrich, it was his 9th goal of the season, with Horan adding his second assist of the game. Junior defender John Jammers (Geneva, Switzerland) would also receive credit for an assist on the goal.

Despite the balanced effort, the Ravens could not hold on to the lead to close out the frame. After a blocked shot off the leg of senior Jason Ladzinski (Norcross, Ga.), Nick Brewer wired a shot past Martin's glove side, bringing the two teams into the third period tied at two-apiece.

With the game tied heading into the third period, freshman defender Declan House (Roselle Park, N.J.) whipped a shot from the blue line that was deflected by Cody Rumsey, who re-established the lead for Pierce with his 7th goal of the season. However, with the Ravens just 1:12 away from the victory, the Eagles played spoiler with the tying goal. After Connor Barter fired an initial shot, a rebound kicked out to Niko Grollman who scored a dramatic last-minute goal for the hosts, forcing overtime.

From a 3-3 deadlock through regulation, neither team would score the game-winner in overtime, resulting in a tie and a point for both sides.

Kyle Martin (Westford, Mass.) earned the tie (9-6-2) in net for the Ravens, turning aside 36-of-39 shots he faced. Zach Richards (0-1-1) received the start in net for the Eagles, stopping 31-of-34 shots he faced.

The Ravens will begin their final regular season series at home with in-state rival Saint Anselm College on February 17th with a 7:00 p.m. face-off.
