Men's Hockey Blanked by Southern New Hampshire, 4-0

Hookset, N.H. (2/4/23) - From the opening puck drop, it was clear that it was going to be a physical matchup between in-state rivals Franklin Pierce University and the Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 men's hockey action. However, the offensive edge went to the Penman as they cruised their way to a 4-0 shutout win over the Ravens at Ice Den Arena.

With the loss, the Ravens fall to 9-16-1 (6-9-1 NE10) overall while the Penman improve to 8-15-0 (7-11-0 NE10) following the victory.

The Penman struck first blood at the 7:30 mark of the opening period as the graduate Travis Quigley went to the backhand and buried it over the shoulder of Ravens goaltender Kyle Martin (Westford, Mass.), giving the Penman the 1-0 lead. Eleven minutes later in the period, SNHU would add another one as a loose puck off a Martin rebound fell to the stick of forward Tim Usalis, extending the Penmen lead to 2-0.

The second period was back and forth affair, as both teams created genuine opportunities to find the back of the net, but could not capitalize on them. As a result, the second frame would go scoreless, with SNHU maintaining their 2-0 lead heading into the third.

The final 20 minutes had a similar look to that of the second period, as both teams continued to trade chances and defend. However, with 3:31 left in the final period, Kyle Martin lost sight of a loose puck with chaos ensuing in front of the Raven goal, ultimately resulting in a tap-in tally by George Thurston on the power play to add the insurance for the Penman. Nearing the final horn, SNHU finished things up with an empty netter off a center-ice turnover, finalizing the final score of 4-0.

Kyle Martin (8-7-1) faced a barrage of shots in goal for Pierce, as the Penman totaled 56 total on the evening, with Martin turning aside 52. Southern New Hampshire's Nathan Loisel (3-1-0) claimed his first career shutout for the Penman, making stopping all 36 Raven shots for the win. Junior forward Trevor Lawler (East Bridgewater, Mass.) led all Raven players with six shots in the loss.

The Ravens return to home ice on Tuesday, February 7th for a make-up contest with Stonehill College for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop.
