Men's Ice Hockey Overwhelmed in 6-1 Loss at LIU

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (12/10/22) – Things did not quite go as planned in the weekend series opener for Men's Hockey versus Long Island University (LIU), as a three-goal third period for the Sharks drowned out the Ravens in a 6-1 loss at the Northwell Health Ice Center Saturday evening.

Men's hockey has a two game streak snapped, and drop to 8-6 (5-3 NE10) following the road loss. For LIU, the Sharks improve to 5-10-1 on the season with the win.

LIU owned the lone goal of the first, with forward Anthony Vincent breaking the ice at the 15:07 mark of the period. However, Pierce would tie it all up on junior Trevor Lawler's (East Bridgewater, Mass.) third goal of the season, which came unassisted just 4:28 into the second period. From there onward, it would all unravel for the Ravens.

The Sharks began to pile it on beginning with a goal from Jordan Di Cicco, returning the host squad to the lead, 2-1  just minutes after Lawler's tying goal. Towards the end of the second period, Anthony Vincent returned for seconds to put LIU up 3-1 on the Ravens, which would hold out entering the third. Throughout the first two period of play, the Sharks held a 47-4 shots advantage over the Ravens.

The third period would continue to be all LIU, as the Sharks would tack on an additional trio of goals including two on the powerplay. When the final horn sounded, LIU paired the final 6-1 win with an astonishing 75-8 total shots advantage on Pierce, which set a new program record for the Sharks.

Raven starter Kyle Martin (Westford, Mass.) played in just 14:11 of the contest, making 9 saves on equal amount of shots before being replaced by backup Brogan McDonald (Gorham, Maine) following a media timeout. McDonald was credited with the loss after facing 66 total shots, turning away 60 to move into second all-time in single game saves by a Pierce goaltender. For the win, Sharks' Vinnie Purpura stopped 7-of-8 shots faced.

Men's hockey will remain for one more round against LIU tomorrow (12/11) evening, with the puck hitting the ice at 7:15 p.m.
