Men’s Ice Hockey Bettered by Becker, 4-1

Cody Rumsey

WINCHENDON, Mass. (February 6, 2021) – For the second time in two days, the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team took to the ice against the Becker College Hawks. For the second time in two days, the final score was 4-1. On Saturday night at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena though, the result went against the Ravens. Junior forward Jason Diamond cashed in a pair of goals to lead Becker to the non-conference win.

With the loss the Ravens fall to 1-1-0 on the short season while the Hawks pick up their first win and move to 1-1-0 as well.

The game went scoreless until the 18:32 mark in the first period, when Diamond put a top-shelf backhand home, after receiving a pass in the slot from sophomore forward Luke James below the goal line. Senior forward Romain Wild added the first of his two assists on the night as well.

The Ravens would tie the game 4:30 into the second frame, thanks to junior forward Chris Stevenson (Arvada, Colo.). Stevenson had put the puck into the back of the net no more than a minute earlier, but the play was called back due to a high stick. This time around, sophomore forwards Conor Foley (Nahant, Mass.) and Jason Ladzinski (Norcross, Ga.) were able to connect on a pass from behind the net to the slot. The puck wound up on the stick of Stevenson, who fired the puck past Becker freshman goaltender Andrew LoRusso.

Becker would go on to score three more goals: a pair in the second half of the second period and the lone goal in the third. Sophomore forward Colby Audette gave the Hawks the lead for good with a goal at the 11:34 mark in the period on a semi-breakaway. Freshman defenseman Cameron Gaylor had forced a turnover at his own blue line, which sprung freshman forward Hunter Phillips the other way, and the latter ultimately set up Audette crashing towards the goal. Diamond would net his second of the night just under two minutes later, at 13:18, after a tic-tac-toe play with his line mates, Wild and James, left him alone in front of the net.

Senior defenseman Phil Garcia would put the finishing touch on the game with a power-play goal 2:56 into the final period, as he rifled home a shot from the top of the right circle off of a setup from junior forward Chuck Costello and sophomore forward Mikey Wilson.

Junior goaltender Adam Carman (Vestal, N.Y.) finished with 26 saves against 30 shots and suffered the loss (0-1-0) in net for the Ravens. LoRusso (1-0-0) made his collegiate debut at the other end of the ice and turned aside 26 of 27 shots to pick up the win for Becker.
