Men’s Ice Hockey Blanked at Assumption, 4-0

Franklin Pierce men's ice hockey

WORCESTER, Mass. (January 26, 2018) – Two goals in the first half of the second period would be all Assumption needed on Friday night at Buffone Arena. The Greyhounds cashed two more in the third to go on to deal a 4-0 defeat to the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team in Northeast-10 Conference play. Three different players had a goal and an assist each for the homestanding Greyhounds.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 5-13-1 (2-6-1 NE10), while Assumption improves to 9-8-2 (5-5-1 NE10). The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at Buffone Arena to wrap up the three-game season series. Opening faceoff is set for 8:35 p.m.

After a scoreless first period, Assumption struck for the only two goals of the second period. The only goal the Greyhounds would need came just 75 seconds into the frame, when freshman forward John Chamberlain curled into the left-wing circle and snapped a shot over the glove hand of Franklin Pierce senior goaltender Tom McGuckin (Clayton, N.J.). Junior forward Peter McDonagh and senior forward Cam Laughlin provided the assists on Chamberlain's fifth goal of the season.

Later, after Assumption's initial surge towards the net was parried aside, senior forward Mike Sorenti jumped on a rebound in the left circle and buried it for his fifth goal of the campaign. Senior defenseman Brad Andersen picked up the lone assist at the 8:01 mark.

A power-play marker at 6:26 of the third all but put the game out of reach and pushed the lead to 3-0. Sophomore defenseman Robert Roache teed up a shot from the left point. Laughlin was stationed at the top of the crease and was able to deflect the puck inside the right post for his team-leading 12th goal of the season. Chamberlain added an assist as well, to complete his two-point night.

Things got a bit chippy down the stretch in Worcester, with the deficit now at three goals, setting the stage for Saturday night's rematch. Each team picked up a five-minute major for an ill-advised check in the final 10 minutes.

The Assumption major came second, which left Franklin Pierce with 2:32 worth of power-play time at the end of the stanza, still facing the three-goal margin. The Ravens elected to pull McGuckin for the extra attacker in order to try to get something going with the man advantage, but it would be to no avail. Instead, McDonagh tapped his fifth goal of the season into the empty net for his fifth goal of the year. Junior defenseman Kieran Peters had the lone assist on the shorthanded tally at 18:59.

McGuckin (3-10-1) finished with 28 saves against 31 shots and suffered the loss in net for Franklin Pierce. At the other end of the ice, sophomore netminder David Zulauf (5-4-1) stopped all 21 shots he faced to tally his first collegiate shutout.
