Men’s Ice Hockey Pours it on Late, Wins at SNHU, 6-1

HOOKSETT, N.H. (February 4, 2017) – Leading 2-1 after two periods, the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team put home four third-period goals on Saturday night to win going away, 6-1, on the road at Southern New Hampshire. Sophomore forward Nicholas Fotiu (Falmouth, Mass.) scored twice and junior forward Jonathan Haun (Buffalo, N.Y.) added 1-2-3 for the Ravens in the Northeast-10 Conference contest at the Ice Den.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 9-13-1 (3-7-0 NE10), while Southern New Hampshire falls to 12-13-0 (4-6-0 NE10). With the ninth win of the season, Franklin Pierce matched the program record for wins in a season, originally set in 2012-13 (9-13-3). The Ravens will have a chance to establish a new record in the season finale, when they host Assumption in an NE10 contest on Saturday, Feb. 11. Opening faceoff is set for 8 p.m. at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena in Winchendon, Mass.

Despite being outshot 17-3 in the period, Franklin Pierce put home the only goal of the first frame on Saturday night. Haun struck for his ninth of the season on the power play at 11:52, with assists going to freshman forward Alex Lester (Methuen, Mass.) and freshman defenseman Cameron Shepardson (Albany, N.Y.).

The two sides would trade second-period goals, leaving the Ravens ahead 2-1 heading into the second intermission. Franklin Pierce struck first to double the lead to 2-0, at 5:14. Fotiu provided the eventual game-winner, his third goal of the season, with an assist credited to sophomore defenseman Dylan Yameen (Methuen, Mass.). SNHU answered with a power-play marker at 9:43 to cut the deficit in half. Freshman forward Brandon Goudreau scored the only goal of the night for the Penmen, his second of the year, while assists came from freshman defenseman Brian O'Callaghan and senior forward Joe Collins.

Franklin Pierce proceeded to pour home four goals in the third period, including three special-teams goals, to pull away for the 6-1 victory. Senior forward Connor Mauro (Shrewsbury, Mass.) started things just 21 seconds into the stanza, with his third goal of the season, off assists from Haun and freshman forward Matthew Toombs (Pleasanton, Calif.). Fotiu followed with his second of the night, shorthanded, at 2:39, with junior forward Blake Manginell (Troy, Mich.) providing the lone assist.

The Ravens would tack on a pair of power-play goals in quick succession inside the final two minutes to cap the scoring. First, with a two-man advantage, Toombs put away his sixth of the season at 18:02, off helpers from senior defenseman Taylor Fletcher (Leominster, Mass.) and Haun. Just 13 seconds later, at 18:15, junior forward Evan Marek (Enfield, Conn.) tallied his fourth goal of the year, with sophomore defenseman Blaise Kilroy (Spring City, Pa.) and sophomore forward Nate Indelicato (Pembroke, Mass.) contributing assists.

Junior goaltender Tom McGuckin (Clayton, N.J.) finished with 34 saves against 35 shots on goal to pick up the win (8-12-1) between the pipes for Franklin Pierce. At the other end of the ice, junior netminder Matthew MacInnis (3-3-0) made 27 saves against 33 shots and suffered the loss for SNHU.
