Men’s Ice Hockey Falls at Stonehill, 8-2, in Season Finale

Mauro FOXBORO, Mass. (February 18, 2015) – Junior forward Brendan Glynn (Quincy, Mass.) and sophomore forward Connor Mauro (Shrewsbury, Mass.) scored on the final day of the season for the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team, but Stonehill used a trio of power-play goals and a 47-35 shots advantage to roll to an 8-2 win in Northeast-10 Conference play at Foxboro Sports Center. Freshman defenseman Connor Tedesco had three assists and five other Stonehill players had two points each in the victory.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce finishes its season at 3-20-1 (2-8-1 Northeast-10), while Stonehill improves to 14-5-4 (8-0-2 Northeast-10). The win also allowed Stonehill to sweep the three-game season series from Franklin Pierce.

Franklin Pierce opened the scoring on Wednesday night, 4:41 into the first period. Glynn put home his sixth of the season, off of an assist from senior forward Tim Sullivan (Rye, N.H.).

Stonehill scored twice before the period was over to take a 2-1 lead it would never relinquish. Freshman forward Tommy Newton scored his second of the season at the 8:09 mark to tie the game, while Tedesco and junior forward Willy Baker added the assists. Sophomore forward Brian Higgins followed with his third of the campaign at 18:50, off of assists from junior forward Tom Jenkins and senior forward Stephen Balsamo.

Stonehill scored all three of the game's second-period goals, each coming on the power play, as the Skyhawks went 3-for-4 with the man-advantage in the middle stanza. Senior defenseman Brendan Greene notched his second of the year at 3:25, while junior forward Garrett White and senior forward Kevin Aufiero provided the assists. Aufiero had another helper at 8:54, as he and junior defenseman Brian Furey set up the seventh of the year for junior forward Thomas DePoalo. Junior forward Anthony D'Elia capped the period's scoring with his 11th of the season at 13:19, off of assists from Tedesco and junior forward Robbie Dorgan.

The Skyhawks pushed the lead to 6-1 at the 5:20 mark of the third period, as Tedesco and Higgins set up Balsamo's fourth of the season. The Ravens briefly closed the gap to 6-2 at 9:40, as Mauro put home his seventh of the year off of assists from freshman forward Brad Riccardi (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and senior defenseman Brendan FitzPatrick (Winthrop, Mass.).

Stonehill put away two more goals in the second half of the third period to create the 8-2 final. D'Elia made it a two-point night with an assist on junior defenseman Travis Army's fifth of the season at 12:20. Dorgan capped the game's scoring with his ninth of the season at 19:20, off of an assist from junior forward Dan Graham.

Freshman goaltender Tom McGuckin (Clayton, N.J.) started in goal for Franklin Pierce, made 22 saves against 27 shots over the first 33:19 and took the loss (1-6-0). Fellow freshman Étienne Roy (Saint-Henri, Quebec) logged the final 26:41 and made 17 stops against 20 shots.

Senior Chris Tasiopoulos played the first 48:46 in the crease for Stonehill, made 23 saves against 24 shots and picked up the win (13-3-3). Junior Matt Palella made 10 stops against 11 shots over the final 11:14.
