Men’s Ice Hockey Dropped at Nichols, 4-1

Federico nets lone Ravens goal

Federico Federico potted his team-leading fifth goal of the season on Wednesday night at Nichols.

HARRISVILLE, R.I. (December 7, 2011) – Junior forward Dino Federico (Canton, Mass.) scored a third-period goal on Wednesday night, but the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team was defeated on the road, 4-1, by Nichols in non-conference play at Levy Rink. Freshman forward Louie Educate scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Bison to the victory.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 1-5-2 (1-1-1 Northeast-10), while Nichols improves to 2-7-1 (1-3-0 ECAC Northeast).

Most of the first period went without an opening goal before Educate gave Nichols a lead it would never relinquish with 2:57 to play in the frame. His eighth of the season came off assists from senior forward Andrew Letellier and freshman forward Joe Sposit. Educate would bookend the first intermission with his second of the game, just 29 seconds into the second stanza, when he converted off the setup of sophomore forward Greg Strootman and freshman forward Tyler Marek to make it 2-0 Nichols.

Just shy of 12 minutes after the second Educate goal, freshman defenseman Kyle Shapiro extended the lead to 3-0 with his first career goal. Sposit and senior forward Andrew Ella provided the helpers at the 12:21 mark.

Federico got the Ravens on the board with their only goal of the game just 51 seconds into the third period with an unassisted marker, his fifth of the season. Freshman defenseman Evan Jones picked up his first career goal to cap the scoring and create the 4-1 final with just 2:43 to play off an Educate assist.

Junior goaltender Pat Dunn (Quincy, Mass.) piled up 40 saves, but took the loss (0-3-1) between the pipes for Franklin Pierce. Senior Jacob Rinn stopped 31 shots to pick up the win (2-4-1) in front of the Nichols net.

Nichols posted a 44-32 advantage in shots on goal in the game and went 0-for-2 on the power play. Franklin Pierce finished 0-for-4 with the man-advantage.

The Ravens return to the ice on Friday, Dec. 9, when they return home to host University of New England in a non-conference contest. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena in Winchendon, Mass.
