WINCHENDON, Mass. (November 5, 2011) – Junior forward Danny Kaufmann struck for two goals, while freshman defenseman Lukas Samuelsson added three assists on Saturday night to lead Johnson & Wales to a 5-0 victory over the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team in non-conference play at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce opens its season 0-1-0 (0-0-0 Northeast-10), while Johnson & Wales improves to 2-0-0 (0-0-0 ECAC Northeast).

JWU struck for the only goal of the first period when junior forward Eddie Patterson picked up his first of the season at the 9:06 mark. Samuelsson picked up his first assist of the game after his wide shot from the point rebounded off the boards and gave Patterson a chance to bury the puck at the right post.

JWU pushed the lead to 4-0 with three goals in the middle stanza, the first of which came off a textbook play with the man-advantage. With Franklin Pierce junior forward Dino Federico (Canton, Mass.) in the penalty box for tripping, the Wildcats won an offensive-zone faceoff back to Samuelsson at the right point. He slid a pass across to junior defenseman Trevor Jewell, who hammered a one-time slapshot. Kaufmann had made his way into the shooting lane after the draw and redirected the shot past Franklin Pierce sophomore goaltender Dave O'Brien (Groton, Mass.) for his first goal of the season. Just 31 seconds later, junior forward Erick Vos made it 3-0 with his first goal of the season amidst a scramble out front, as senior forward Kyle Botos and junior forward Ryan Kelly added assists.

The Wildcats would strike for another goal before the period's end on another power play, as Kaufmann picked up his second goal and Samuelsson his third assist of the evening. Kaufmann finished from the slot off Samuelsson's feed from the right corner at 19:08, while sophomore forward Ian DePasquale added a helper as well.

The Wildcats rounded out the scoring in the middle of the third period, when junior forward Jason Pietrasiak forced a turnover that sent freshman forward Alex Porrier on a partial breakaway. Porrier snapped a shot to the top-right corner for his first goal of the season at 11:39.

O'Brien made 15 saves and took the loss (0-1-0) in front of the net for Franklin Pierce. Junior goaltender Matt Cooper stopped all 27 shots he faced to post his first shutout of the season (fourth career) and pick up the win (2-0-0) between the pipes for Johnson & Wales.

Franklin Pierce posted a 27-20 advantage in shots on goal in the game and went 0-for-4 on the power play. Johnson & Wales finished 2-for-4 with the man-advantage.

The Ravens return to the ice on Tuesday, Nov. 8, when they travel to Salve Regina for a non-conference contest. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Portsmouth Abbey Ice Rink in Portsmouth, R.I. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on Saturday, Nov. 19 against Southern New Hampshire at 7 p.m.
