Ravens rally from 3-1, third-period deficit

BOSTON, Mass. (January 10, 2012) – Junior forward Tom Mills (Oxford, England) scored the game-winning goal 1:58 into overtime on Tuesday afternoon to give the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team a 4-3 win over Suffolk in non-conference play at Walter Brown Arena. Sophomore forward Charlie McGinnis scored twice in a losing effort for Suffolk.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 2-8-3 (1-2-1 Northeast-10), while Suffolk falls to 2-10-0 (0-4-0 ECAC Northeast).

Suffolk opened the scoring a shade over halfway through the opening period, at the 10:45 mark. With a boarding major to Franklin Pierce junior defenseman Brendan McCarron (Andover, Mass.) up on the board, McGinnis struck for his seventh of the season on the power play, with assists to sophomore forward Josh Groyl and sophomore defenseman Jon Stauffer. McGinnis and Groyl would team up on a goal again at 17:02, when the former notched his second of the game to give the Rams a 2-0 lead.

Sophomore forward Brandon Dennis (Williamsport, Md.) answered for the Ravens just 52 seconds after the second McGinnis goal to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. Freshman forward Tim Sullivan (Rye, N.H.) and junior forward Roscoe Sweeney (Falmouth, Mass.) chipped in the assists.

The only goal of the second period came with 3:01 to play in the stanza to give Suffolk a 3-1 lead. Sophomore forward Ryan DesRoches potted his third of the season, while freshman defenseman Creg Cook and freshman forward Dan Mazzei added the helpers.

Heading into the third period facing a two-goal deficit, the Ravens wasted little time, as they cut the Suffolk lead to one in the first five minutes. At 3:58, with Mazzei in the box for hooking, junior forward Michael Carr (South Boston, Mass.) notched his sixth goal of the season, all in the last four games, off assists from junior forward Dino Federico (Canton, Mass.) and sophomore defenseman Andrew Dadds (Mount Ephraim, N.J.). A shade over 10 minutes later, Franklin Pierce would complete the comeback to tie the game at 3-3. Sweeney netted the equalizer, his third of the season, with assists from Dadds and Dennis at 14:34.

The third-period rally set the stage for Mills to win the game 1:58 into overtime. Sophomore defenseman Kyle Craig (Quincy, Mass.) picked up the lone assist on Mills' second goal of the season.

Senior goaltender Ben Siok (Holden, Mass.) made 23 saves to pick up the win (1-2-0) between the pipes for Franklin Pierce. Sophomore Cam Kelley stopped 25 shots and took the loss (2-10-0) in front of the Suffolk net.

Franklin Pierce posted a 29-26 advantage in shots on goal in the game and went 1-for-5 on the power play. Suffolk finished 1-for-3 with the man-advantage.

The Ravens return to the ice on Saturday, Jan. 14, when they travel to Southern New Hampshire for a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Ice Den in Hooksett, N.H. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on Saturday, Jan. 28 against Assumption at 7:30 p.m.
