Ice Hockey Downed at Fitchburg State, 9-3, On First Day of ICFCU Shootout

Federico figures on all three Ravens goals

Federico Federico had a three-point night with a goal and two assists at Fitchburg State in the ICFCU Shootout on Friday night.

FITCHBURG, Mass. (November 12, 2010) – Sophomore forward Dino Federico (Canton, Mass.) scored a goal and assisted on two others on Friday night, but the Franklin Pierce University ice hockey team was defeated, 9-3, by host Fitchburg State on the first day of the IC Federal Credit Union Shootout at Wallace Civic Center. Sophomore forward Justin Quinn finished with four points on two goals and two assists to lead Fitchburg State to the victory.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 0-5-0 (0-0-0 Northeast-10), while Fitchburg State opens its season at 1-0-0 (0-0-0 Massachusetts State). The loss sends Franklin Pierce to the consolation round of the ICFCU Shootout at 1 p.m. Saturday against Assumption at the Wallace Civic Center.

Fitchburg State broke the game open in the first period, as it jumped to a 4-0 lead it would never relinquish. Senior forward Kevin McCready opened the scoring at the six-minute mark, while junior forward Cory Callen followed to make it 2-0 at 9:05 as both players tallied their first goals of the season. Quinn scored his first of the season and first of the night shorthanded at 11:41 to make it 3-0. Senior defenseman Billy Pescosolido's first goal of the season came at the 17:18 mark of the opening stanza to make it 4-0 and gave Pescosolido a two-point night after he assisted on the McCready goal earlier. Sophomore forward Jack Vets chipped in a pair of assists in the period.

Fitchburg State would make it 5-0 on the other side of the first intermission, as junior forward Thomas McAleer potted his first of the season at 3:53 while Quinn dished out his first assist of the night.

The Ravens would get on the board less than two minutes later, as Federico scored for the second time in three games, on the power play, at 5:39. Junior forwards Anthony Chighisola (Whitman, Mass.) and Pat Shortt (New Haven, Conn.) provided the assists on the play. After goals from Quinn and sophomore forward Curtis Nikitas made it 7-1, Chighisola would score a goal of his own, to complete his two-point night, at 15:31. His second of the season came off assists from Federico and freshman forward Bryan Colella (Medfield, Mass.), who earned his first career point.

Junior defenseman Travis Bertolotti scored at 17:27 of the second, while sophomore forward Trevor Lawler opened the final stanza with a goal at the 1:27 mark as Fitchburg State pushed the lead as high as 9-2. Senior defenseman Sean Carroll (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) rounded out the scoring and created the 9-3 final with his first of the season at 16:15 of the final frame. Federico and sophomore defenseman Brendan McCarron (Andover, Mass.) provided the assists on the power-play goal.

Freshman goaltender Dale Adams (Gardner, Mass.) started, made 29 saves and took the loss (0-2-0) in front of the Franklin Pierce net before being relieved after the seventh Fitchburg State goal. Fellow freshman Dave O'Brien (Groton, Mass.) minded the Ravens net for the final 30:26 and made 26 saves. Junior Bobby Leiser stopped 24 shots to pick up the win (1-0-0) between the pipes for Fitchburg State.

Fitchburg State posted a 64-27 advantage in shots on goal in the game and went 2-for-11 on the power play. Franklin Pierce finished 2-for-5 with the man-advantage.
