WINCHENDON, Mass. (November 17, 2009) – Sophomore forward Anthony Chighisola (Whitman, Mass.) scored two goals on Tuesday night as the Franklin Pierce University ice hockey team played to a 4-4 tie at home against Southern New Hampshire in Northeast-10 Conference play at The Winchendon School Ice Arena. Senior forward Ryan DiBartolomeo tallied a goal and an assist in the draw for Southern New Hampshire.

With the tie, Franklin Pierce moves to 1-3-2 (0-0-1 Northeast-10), while Southern New Hampshire is now 2-1-2 (0-0-1 Northeast-10).

Southern New Hampshire opened the scoring just 33 seconds into the contest. Senior forward Matt Farley and Kent Honeyman orchestrated a set of quick passes which found DiBartolomeo with speed and space coming across the blue line. He let a shot fly from the left point which found its way behind Franklin Pierce sophomore goaltender Ben Siok (Holden, Mass.) to give the Penmen a 1-0 lead.

Franklin Pierce would answer five minutes later with a pair of quick goals to give the Ravens a 2-1 lead. First, on the power play at the 5:14 mark, senior forward Phil LaBreck (Thornton, N.H.) fed senior forward Casey Goodell (Rochester, N.H.), who in turn slipped a pass to Chighisola cutting through the slot. Chighisola jammed the pass home for his team-leading third goal of the season. Just eight seconds later, it was Chighisola again, deflecting home another pass from Goodell to give Franklin Pierce the lead. The Ravens would retain the lead through the remainder of the first period, thanks in large part to Siok’s stop of Southern New Hampshire junior forward Andrew Hildreth on a penalty shot with 3:40 to play in the period.

Franklin Pierce would find the net early in the second period to extend the lead to 3-1. Freshman defenseman Tyler Cornele (Cape Coral, Fla.) swung a pass to sophomore defenseman Michael King (Center Conway, N.H.), who uncorked a shot from the left point. Freshman forward Jonathan Schanke (Wallingford, Conn.) was able to redirect the shot behind Penmen senior goaltender Shane Brooks for his second goal of the season.

However, later in the second period, it would be Southern New Hampshire’s turn to net a quick pair of goals to knot the game at 3-3. First, sophomore forward Brandon Bradley struck on the power play at the 12:30 mark, as he put home a shot from the top of the right circle off assists from junior forward Troy Maybury and DiBartolomeo. Only 17 seconds later, junior forward William Toomey jammed home a rebound out in front of the net to tie the game, with assists awarded to senior forward Jake Berube and Honeyman.

The two clubs would then swap goals in the first half of the third period to finalize the scoring. First, at the 5:25 mark, Franklin Pierce took a 4-3 lead as sophomore forward Justin Adams (Homer, Alaska) stuffed home a rebound for his first goal of the season as freshman defenseman Brendan McCarron (Andover, Mass.) and Schanke picked up the assists. Just under three minutes later, at the 8:01 mark, junior forward Adam Ziegler tied the game at 4-4 for Southern New Hampshire as he collected a rebound and slipped it into the net, with the assists going to Farley and junior defenseman Neil Adams. Neither team could find the net for the remainder of the third period or over time, as the game ended in a tie.

Siok made 29 saves to earn the tie (1-3-2) in net for Franklin Pierce, while Brooks stopped 18 shots to pick up the tie (2-0-2) between the pipes for Southern New Hampshire.

Southern New Hampshire held a 34-21 edge in shots on goal in the game, and went 2-for-3 on the power play. Franklin Pierce went 1-for-6 with the man-advantage.

The Ravens return to the ice on Thursday, Nov. 19, when they remain home to host Worcester State in a non-conference contest. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at The Winchendon School Ice Arena.
