HARRISVILLE, R.I. (November
14, 2009) – Freshman forward Jonathan
Schanke (Wallingford, Conn.) and sophomore forward
Anthony Chighisola (Whitman, Mass.) each scored a
goal on Saturday afternoon as the Franklin Pierce University ice
hockey team played to a 2-2 tie against Nichols in non-conference
play at Levy Rink. Sophomore forward Zach Hendrickson scored the
game-tying goal 5:47 into the third period for Nichols.
With the tie, Franklin Pierce moves to 1-3-1 (0-0-0 Northeast-10),
while Nichols is now 1-0-1 (0-0-0 ECAC Northeast).
Nichols opened the scoring with a goal off a faceoff on the power
play at the 10:39 mark of the opening frame. Freshman forward
Dustin Skinner won the draw back to freshman forward Zach Kohn, who
slipped a pass to freshman defenseman Bryan Gill, who knocked home
a one-timer for his first goal of the season. Franklin Pierce would
draw even just less than four minutes later. Schanke got his stick
to the puck amidst a scramble in front of the cage and stuffed it
into the net for his first goal of the season.
The Ravens would then take the lead with 1:01 to play in the second
stanza. Off a Nichols turnover in the neutral zone, sophomore
forward Bill Sullivan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had the
puck on his stick and came in two-on-zero against the goaltender
with Chighisola. Sullivan fed Chighisola, who then put a backhander
upstairs to beat Nichols freshman goaltender Ryan Casey.
However, Nichols would score 5:47 into the third period to force
the 2-2 tie. Junior forward Matt Roberts dug the puck out on the
left sideboards and fed it to freshman defenseman JD Gordon at the
left point. Gordon sent a low slapper in the direction of the net,
which a crossing Hendrickson tipped over the shoulder of Franklin
Pierce sophomore goaltender Ben Siok (Holden,
Mass.) for his second goal of the season.
Neither team scored in the third period, while Nichols collected
all five shots on goal in the extra session.
Siok made 41 saves to earn the tie (1-3-1) in net for Franklin
Pierce, while Casey stopped 29 shots to pick up the tie (1-0-1)
between the pipes for Nichols.
Nichols held a 43-31 edge in shots on goal in the game, and went
1-for-6 on the power play. Franklin Pierce did not score in three
attempts with the man-advantage.
The Ravens return to the ice on Tuesday, Nov. 17, when they return
home to host Southern New Hampshire in a Northeast-10 Conference
contest. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at The Winchendon School
Ice Arena.
