RINDGE, N.H. (March 3, 2010) – Freshman forward Roscoe Sweeney (Falmouth, Mass.) of the Franklin Pierce University ice hockey team has been named Northeast-10 Freshman of the Year, as announced Wednesday by the conference office. In addition, Sweeney was an All-Northeast-10 Conference Second Team selection and named to the conference’s All-Rookie Team. Also, sophomore forward Anthony Chighisola (Whitman, Mass.) has been selected All-Northeast-10 Conference First Team.

Sweeney finished the season as the top freshman scorer in the Northeast-10 and fifth among all players, as he chalked up 31 points, one more than Tucker Mullin of Saint Anselm. He tied for the team lead with 19 assists, ranked second in points and tied for second with 12 goals. Sweeney scored four power-play goals, two short-handed goals and one game-winning goal while amassing just eight penalty minutes and playing in 24 of the Ravens’ 25 games. His 31 points are tied for second in a single season in program history behind only Chighisola, and are the most points scored by a freshman in team annals. Sweeney was named Northeast-10 Freshman of the Week twice this season, Northeast-10 Player of the Week once and added a pair of Weekly Honor Roll selections as well. He became the first Franklin Pierce player to score two short-handed goals in a season, with both of his coming in the same game on Jan. 30 against Stonehill, a game in which Sweeney chalked up five points on three goals and two assists.

Anthony Chighisola Anthony Chighisola has been selected All-Conference First Team by the Northeast-10 Conference.

Chighisola led Franklin Pierce and finished tied for third in the Northeast-10 with 36 points. He led the team and placed third in the conference with 17 goals and added 19 assists. Chighisola’s 17 goals and 36 points both set new program single-season records, while his 19 assists tied the high-water mark set by Joe Fields in 2006-07. He racked up a team-leading six power-play goals on the season and was one of four Ravens to play in all 25 games this winter. Through 49 career games over two seasons, Chighisola has 29 goals, 33 assists and 62 points, and is on pace to shatter Franklin Pierce’s career records in all three categories. He was named to the Northeast-10 Weekly Honor roll five times during the season.

This winter, Franklin Pierce (7-15-2, 4-4-1 Northeast-10) set new program records for wins, both overall and in the Northeast-10. The Ravens captured the fourth seed in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship and hosted a game in the quarterfinal round for the second consecutive season.
