Sweeney collects four points, Chighisola tallies three

Anthony Chighisola Anthony Chighisola scored two goals and picked up an assist on Tuesday night at Southern New Hampshire.

HOOKSETT, N.H. (January 19, 2010) – Sophomore forward Anthony Chighisola (Whitman, Mass.) scored two goals and added an assist on Tuesday night, but the Franklin Pierce University ice hockey team was defeated, 5-4, by Southern New Hampshire in Northeast-10 Conference play at The Ice Den. Junior forward Bob Bryant scored twice, including the game-winning goal, for Southern New Hampshire.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 4-12-2 (1-5-1 Northeast-10), while Southern New Hampshire improves to 3-9-2 (1-2-1 Northeast-10) with the victory.

Franklin Pierce opened the scoring 9:51 into the contest, when Chighisola struck for his first of the ninth, his 11th goal of the season, on assists from freshman forward Roscoe Sweeney (Falmouth, Mass.) and senior forward Phil LaBreck (Thornton, N.H.). However, SNHU would tie the game at 1-1 just 59 seconds later, when Bryant potted his third of the season off a feed from sophomore forward Anthony Dercole. Chighisola would find the net again at the 16:24 mark of the period to give Franklin Pierce a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission, while Sweeney notched his second assist of the evening.

Southern New Hampshire replied with a goal 4:44 into the second period, as junior forward William Toomey struck for his fourth goal of the season, while senior forward John Frey and junior forward Adam Ziegler contributed assists. Nearly eight minutes later, Franklin Pierce would once again take the lead, this time with a power-play goal while on a two-man advantage. Sweeney scored his sixth goal of the season, while Chighisola added the assist, as both players picked up their third point of the contest.

From there, SNHU would score twice in the final five minutes of the period to take a 4-3 lead into the second intermission. First, junior forward Troy Maybury scored his eighth goal of the season, an unassisted tally, with 4:27 remaining in the middle stanza. Senior forward Ryan DiBartoloemo pushed the Penmen in front with his fourth of the season with 57 seconds to play in the period off an assist from sophomore forward Doug Boulanger.

Franklin Pierce tied the score once again in a 4-on-4 situation 6:07 into the third period, when freshman defenseman Matt Lopes (Auburn, N.H.) scored his first career goal, off a feed from Sweeney, who finished off his four-point night. However, SNHU would pick up the game-winning goal just 2:13 later, as Bryant found the net on the power play, with assists going to Dercole and sophomore forward Brandon Bradley.

Senior goaltender Jon Tuttle (Concord, N.H.) made 25 saves and took the loss (3-7-0) in net for Franklin Pierce. Freshman Matt Mastracci stopped 30 shots to pick up the win (1-2-0) between the pipes for Southern New Hampshire.

Franklin Pierce posted a 34-30 advantage in shots on goal in the game and went 1-for-7 on the power play. Southern New Hampshire finished 1-for-6 with the man-advantage.

The Ravens return to the ice on Saturday, Jan. 23, when they return home to host Plymouth State in a non-conference contest. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at The Winchendon School Ice Arena in Winchendon, Mass.
