LaBreck nets lone goal for Ravens

Phil LaBreck Phil LaBreck scored the only goal of the game for the Ravens on Friday night at Morrisville State.

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. (December 5, 2008) – Junior forward Andrew Alarie (Carlisle, Ontario) scored twice and added an assist on Friday night to lead Morrisville State to a 9-1 victory over the Franklin Pierce University ice hockey team in non-conference play at Morrisville State College IcePlex. Junior forward Phil LaBreck (Thornton, N.H./Thornton) scored the only goal of the game for Franklin Pierce.

Morrisville State scored four times in the first period and never looked back. Sophomore forward Bobby Cass (Burlington, Ontario) opened the scoring with his first of the season on the power play at the 8:00 mark off an assist from freshman defenseman Tom Longland (Dunnville, Ontario). Just less than five minutes later, junior forward Dana Calderone (Bronx, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Wolves) scored the eventual game-winner, his third of the season, off a feed from freshman forward Geoff Matzel (Chittenango, N.Y./Nat’l Sports Acad.) at 12:41. Calderone would then add a power-play tally at the 18:00 mark from senior forward Keith Williams (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro) and Alarie. Only 43 seconds later, junior forward Joakim Cedin (Spanga, Sweden) made it 4-0 heading into the intermission with assists coming from sophomore forward Adam Maglio (Nelson, British Columbia) and senior forward Shawn Smail (Winchester, Ontario).

LaBreck scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season to get Franklin Pierce on the board at the 11:30 mark of the second period. Senior forward Shane Murphy (Tolland, Conn./The Gunnery School) and freshman forward Anthony Chighisola (Whitman, Mass./Archbishop Williams) collected assists on the goal. However, LaBreck’s goal was sandwiched between goals by Alarie and Smail for Morrisville State at the 1:44 and 13:11 marks, respectively. Alarie’s fifth of the season came from sophomore defenseman Derek Matheson (Durham, Ontario) while Smail’s first of the year was assisted by Cedin as the Mustangs held a 6-1 lead after two periods.

Morrisville State capped the night with three goals in the third to create the 9-1 final. Alarie potted his second of the game off a pass from Williams at the 4:04 mark of the final frame. Cass would follow with his second goal of the game on the power play 1:21 later as Matzel and sophomore forward Rob Sgarbossa (Campellville, Ontario) contributed assists. Junior defenseman Kyle Roberts (Whitesboro, N.Y./Wellington Dukes) concluded the scoring at the 11:51 mark with his third goal of the season from sophomore defenseman Garrett Leigh (New Hartford, N.Y./New York Bobcats) and junior forward Stefan Carnegie (Woodbridge, Ontario).

Morrisville State held a 41-37 edge in shots on goal in the game and went 3-for-10 on the power play. Franklin Pierce finished 0-for-15 with the man advantage.

Sophomore goaltender Caylin Relkoff (Grand Forks, British Columbia) played the first 28:54 of the game between the pipes for Morrisville State, stopped all 17 shots he faced and earned his first victory of the season. Freshman Mike Will (Lewes, England) played the final 31:06 in net for the Mustangs and made 19 saves against 20 shots.

Junior goaltender Jon Tuttle (Concord, N.H./Concord) played the first period in front of the Franklin Pierce goal, made 15 saves on 19 shots and took the loss. Sophomore Matt McCarthy (Natick, Mass./New Hampton School) played the next 31:51 and stopped 12 of 17 shots sent his way. Freshman Ben Siok (Holden, Mass./St. John’s Shrewsbury) then took to the ice and posted a scoreless final 8:09 while making five saves.

The Ravens (2-5-1, 1-0-0 Northeast-10, 2-3-1 ECAC Northeast) return to the ice on Saturday, Dec. 6, for the second half of a weekend set at Morrisville State (1-9-1, 0-7-1 SUNYAC). Faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Morrisville State College IcePlex in Morrisville, N.Y. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on Friday, Dec. 12 against Saint Michael’s at 7 p.m.
