MORRISVILLE, N.Y. (December 5, 2008)
– Junior forward Andrew Alarie (Carlisle, Ontario) scored
twice and added an assist on Friday night to lead Morrisville State
to a 9-1 victory over the Franklin Pierce University ice hockey
team in non-conference play at Morrisville State College IcePlex.
Junior forward Phil LaBreck
(Thornton, N.H./Thornton) scored the only goal of the game
for Franklin Pierce.
Morrisville State scored four times in the first period and never
looked back. Sophomore forward Bobby Cass (Burlington, Ontario)
opened the scoring with his first of the season on the power play
at the 8:00 mark off an assist from freshman defenseman Tom
Longland (Dunnville, Ontario). Just less than five minutes later,
junior forward Dana Calderone (Bronx, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Wolves)
scored the eventual game-winner, his third of the season, off a
feed from freshman forward Geoff Matzel (Chittenango,
N.Y./Nat’l Sports Acad.) at 12:41. Calderone would then add a
power-play tally at the 18:00 mark from senior forward Keith
Williams (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro) and Alarie. Only 43 seconds
later, junior forward Joakim Cedin (Spanga, Sweden) made it 4-0
heading into the intermission with assists coming from sophomore
forward Adam Maglio (Nelson, British Columbia) and senior forward
Shawn Smail (Winchester, Ontario).
LaBreck scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season to get
Franklin Pierce on the board at the 11:30 mark of the second
period. Senior forward Shane
Murphy (Tolland, Conn./The Gunnery School) and freshman
forward Anthony Chighisola
(Whitman, Mass./Archbishop Williams) collected assists on
the goal. However, LaBreck’s goal was sandwiched between
goals by Alarie and Smail for Morrisville State at the 1:44 and
13:11 marks, respectively. Alarie’s fifth of the season came
from sophomore defenseman Derek Matheson (Durham, Ontario) while
Smail’s first of the year was assisted by Cedin as the
Mustangs held a 6-1 lead after two periods.
Morrisville State capped the night with three goals in the third to
create the 9-1 final. Alarie potted his second of the game off a
pass from Williams at the 4:04 mark of the final frame. Cass would
follow with his second goal of the game on the power play 1:21
later as Matzel and sophomore forward Rob Sgarbossa (Campellville,
Ontario) contributed assists. Junior defenseman Kyle Roberts
(Whitesboro, N.Y./Wellington Dukes) concluded the scoring at the
11:51 mark with his third goal of the season from sophomore
defenseman Garrett Leigh (New Hartford, N.Y./New York Bobcats) and
junior forward Stefan Carnegie (Woodbridge, Ontario).
Morrisville State held a 41-37 edge in shots on goal in the game
and went 3-for-10 on the power play. Franklin Pierce finished
0-for-15 with the man advantage.
