BOSTON (November 23, 2008) –
Sophomore forward Tyler Medeiros (Somerset, Mass./Catholic
Memorial) tallied a goal and two assists for three points on Sunday
afternoon to lead Wentworth Institute of Technology to a 6-1
victory over the Franklin Pierce University ice hockey team in ECAC
Northeast Conference play at Matthews Arena. Freshman forward Anthony Chighisola (Whitman,
Mass./Archbishop Williams) scored the only goal of the game
in defeat for Franklin Pierce.
Medeiros opened the scoring just 3:12 into the first period when he
pushed home his own rebound for his third goal of the season, while
sophomore forward Geric Brodt (Anchorage, Alaska/Dauphin) and
freshman forward Mike Paglino (Grosse Pointe Shores, Mich./Bay
State) picked up assists. Junior forward Jeff Olitch (Calgary,
Alberta) would notch the eventual game-winner on the power play
just less than 10 minutes later. Olitch notched his team-leading
seventh goal of the season off assists from Medeiros and freshman
defenseman Alan Dionne (North Scituate, R.I./Boston Jr. Bruins) at
the 12:57 mark to give Wentworth a 2-0 lead.
The Leopards extended the lead to 4-0 with a pair of goals in the
second period. At the 5:02 mark, junior defenseman Martin Winzer
(Nuremberg, Germany) picked up his second goal of the season with
Olitch and freshman forward Skylur Jameson (Long Beach,
Calif./Wichita Falls) tallying assists. Just 3:32 later, senior
forward Dave Lewandowski (Glenmore, Pa./Wichita Falls) gave
Wentworth a four-goal lead with his second goal of the season. The
power-play marker came at the 8:34 mark off assists from sophomore
defensemen Kyle Richardson (San Jose, Calif./Wayne State) and Jeff
Fedyk (Calgary, Alberta).
Franklin Pierce would get on the scoreboard 69 seconds into the
third period. Chighisola notched his team-best third goal of the
season on feeds from freshman forward Bill Sullivan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Jr.
Penguins) and junior forward Phil LaBreck (Thornton, N.H./John Stark
Regional) to cut the Wentworth lead to 4-1.
However, Wentworth would score twice more to stretch the lead to
the 6-1 final score. First, senior forward Joey Sides (Sun Valley,
Idaho/Avon (Conn.) Old Farms) potted his first of the season on the
power play at 9:17 with assists from Medeiros and Richardson.
Later, at the 13:11 mark, junior forward Michael O’Brien
(Royersford, Pa./Philadelphia (AJHL)) and freshman defenseman Tyler
Monteros (Diamond Bar, Calif./Bay State) set up Paglino for a
shorthanded score, the first goal of his career.
Wentworth controlled play throughout the contest, as the Leopards
finished with a 51-22 shots-on-goal advantage. Wentworth went
3-for-9 on the power play, while Franklin Pierce finished 0-for-5
with the man advantage.
Junior goaltender Justin Marriott (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Valley
(EJHL)) made 21 saves in front of the Wentworth cage to earn the
victory. Junior Jon Tuttle
(Concord, N.H./Concord) made 30 saves against 34 shots for
Franklin Pierce over the first two periods. Freshman Ben Siok (Holden, Mass./St. John’s
Shrewsbury) played the final stanza between the pipes for
the Ravens and stopped 15 of 17 shots sent his way.
