Shane Murphy Shane Murphy scored the only goal of the game for the Ravens at Assumption on Saturday night.

WORCESTER, Mass. (January 31, 2009) – Freshman forward Taylor Larsen (Blackstone, Mass./Worcester Academy) scored the game-winning goal 7:32 into the third period on Saturday night to lead Assumption to a 2-1 victory over the Franklin Pierce University ice hockey team in non-conference play at Horgan Memorial Rink. Senior forward Shane Murphy (Tolland, Conn./The Gunnery School) scored the only goal of the game for Franklin Pierce in defeat.

After a scoreless first period, the two clubs traded goals in the first half of the second frame. First, Murphy tallied his fifth of the season just 67 seconds into the period off assists from freshman forward Anthony Chighisola (Whitman, Mass./Williston Northampton) and junior forward Phil LaBreck (Thornton, N.H./John Stark Regional). Later, at the 8:03 mark, Assumption tied the game 1-1 on the fifth goal of the season by sophomore forward Patrick Fitzgibbons (Holliston, Mass./Foxboro Stars), while freshman defenseman Mike Looney (Shrewsbury, Mass./Valley Jr. Warriors) and sophomore defenseman Marc Labb (Longmeadow, Mass./Vermont Academy) picked up the assists.

Larsen would then score the game-winner on the power play at the 7:32 mark of the third period. His seventh goal of the year came off assists from junior defenseman Jon Retelle (Monmouth, Maine/Portland Jr. Pirates) and senior defenseman Chris Genovese (Woburn, Mass./Governors Academy).

Assumption finished with a 35-29 edge in shots on goal and went 1-for-5 on the power play. Franklin Pierce posted an 0-for-7 mark with the man-advantage.

Freshman goaltender Nick Blanchette (Stuart, Fla./Worcester Academy) made 28 saves in net for Assumption to tally the victory. Junior Jon Tuttle (Concord, N.H./Concord) made 33 saves between the pipes for Franklin Pierce, but took the loss.

The Ravens (5-11-2, 1-1-0 NE-10, 4-7-2 ECAC Northeast) return to the ice on Tuesday, Feb. 3, when they travel to Saint Anselm for a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Thomas F. Sullivan Arena in Manchester, N.H. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on Feb. 12 against Southern New Hampshire at 7 p.m. Assumption (4-10-4, 0-4-0 NE-10, 2-5-1 ECAC Northeast) returns to action on Feb. 3 at Johnson & Wales.
