Ice Hockey Falls In Overtime At Worcester State, 4-3

AUBURN, Mass. (January 29, 2009) – Junior forward Andrew Brady (Oreland, Pa./Valley Forge Minutemen) scored the game-winning goal 2:33 into overtime and added an assist in regulation on Thursday night to lead Worcester State to a 4-3 victory over the Franklin Pierce University ice hockey team in ECAC Northeast Conference play at Horgan Memorial Rink. Junior defenseman Rob Perretta (Staten Island, N.Y./Stanstead (Quebec) College) dished out a pair of assists for Franklin Pierce in defeat.

After a scoreless first period, Franklin Pierce opened the scoring just under nine minutes into the second frame. Senior forward Jeff Kasper (South Boston, Mass./Catholic Memorial) potted his fourth of the season at the 8:54 mark, with assists coming from freshman defenseman Michael King (Center Conway, N.H./Laconia Leafs (AJHL)) and Perretta. Just over three minutes later, at the 12:06 mark, sophomore forward Sean Woodring (Rogue River, Ore./Rogue River) extended the lead to 2-0 with his third goal of the season off an assist from freshman forward Nate Schursky (Scottsdale, Ariz./Eugene Generals (NPHL)).

Worcester State would cut the lead in half less than five minutes into the third period. Senior defenseman Bill Knauber (Cheektowga, N.Y./Wheatfield Blades) found the net at the 4:14 mark for his third of the season off feeds from sophomore defenseman Shaun Trippett (Austin, Texas/SUNY-Morrisville) and freshman forward Cody Warila (Shirley, Mass./Boston Jr. Bruins). The Ravens regained a two-goal lead 3:59 later, when senior forward Coursen Schneider (Stony Point, N.Y./Avon (Conn.) Old Farms) made it 3-1 with his fifth of the season on assists from freshman forward Anthony Chighisola (Whitman, Mass./Williston Northampton) and Perretta.

However, Worcester State would score twice in the second half of the period to tie the game 3-3 and force overtime. Sophomore forward Billy O’Neill (Strafford, Pa./Valley Forge Minutemen) struck first with his second of the season at the 11:03 mark in a delayed-penalty situation on an assist by Brady. Later, Warila tied the game with his third of the season with just 1:14 remaining in regulation, while freshman forward John Cahalane (Tewksbury, Mass./Laconia Leafs) and junior forward Mark Rintel (Queens, N.Y./Santa Fe Roadrunners) picked up the assists.

Brady ended the game 2:33 into the extra session with his fourth goal of the season. Freshman forward Nick Asterito (Philadelphia, Pa./Valley Forge Minutemen) and junior forward Lee Belisle (Chicopee, Mass./Chicopee) tallied the assists on the game-winner.

Worcester State finished with a 44-31 edge in shots on goal and went 0-for-6 on the power play. Franklin Pierce posted an 0-for-4 mark with the man-advantage.

Junior goaltender Andrew Evans (Cromwell, Conn./MassConn Braves) made 30 saves to earn the victory in net for Worcester State. Freshman Ben Siok (Holden, Mass./St. John’s Shrewsbury) made 40 saves between the pipes for Franklin Pierce in defeat.

The Ravens (5-10-2, 1-1-0 NE-10, 4-7-2 ECAC Northeast) return to the ice on Saturday, Jan. 31, when they travel to Assumption for a non-conference contest. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Buffone Rink in Worcester, Mass. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on Feb. 12 against Southern New Hampshire at 7 p.m. Worcester State (4-10-1, 2-6-1 ECAC Northeast) returns to action on Jan. 31 at home against Framingham State.
