AUBURN, Mass. (November 12,
2007) – Senior captain Joe Fields
(Towamencin, Pa./Green Mountain Glades) and junior
Coursen Schneider (Stony Point, N.Y./Avon Old
Farms) combined for eight points and the team set a new
school record with seven power-play goals as Franklin Pierce
University emphatically gave first-year head coach Scott Loiseau
his first coaching victory with a 9-6 win over Worcester State
College in a non-conference men’s hockey game at Horgan Rink
on Monday night.
The team tied a program record for most goals in a game, matching
the nine that the Ravens scored in a 9-1 win over Castleton State
College on Feb. 11, 2004, and the team scored on a school-record
7-of-9 power play chances (.778). Sophomore Casey Goodell
(Rochester, N.H./Laconia Leafs) tied two school records
with four assists and five points, while the team’s 56 shots
on goal were the most by the team since the Ravens peppered the
same Worcester State squad with 59 shots on Jan. 25, 2006.
Led by Goodell’s five points, six Raven players recorded
three points or more. Fields and Schneider both scored twice with
two assists, while the team also received a goal and two assists
each from junior Jeff Kasper (South Boston, Mass./Catholic
Memorial) and freshman Sean Woodring (Rogue River,
Ore./Eugene Generals). Senior tri-captain Pete
Wilson (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) added a career-high
three assists and sophomore Phil LaBreck (Thornton,
N.H./Laconia Leafs) added a goal and an assist.
The Ravens came out smoking in the first two periods, as the
visitors jumped out to an insurmountable 7-1 lead through two
periods. Senior Ryan Strayer (Murfreesboro, Tenn./Enfield
(Conn.)) began the onslaught only 1:14 into the first
period, with assists going to Schneider and Goodell. After
Worcester State’s Justin Brownstein (Wyncote, PA) tied the
game at one with a power-play tally at 14:12, Fields began a string
of seven consecutive Raven goals with his first of the season, a
power-play goal, on a two-man advantage at the 16:40 mark.
The Ravens tied a program record with nine goals to give head coach Scott Loiseau his first career win Monday at Worcester State. |
The Ravens then blew the game open
in the second period with five unanswered goals, including four on
the power play. Schneider scored the first goal of the period 4:20
into the frame from LaBreck and Goodell, and Kasper followed with
his third goal in three games only 1:12 later. Later in the period
and with two Lancers in the penalty box, Goodell converted on the
5-on-3 and LaBreck on the subsequent 5-on-4 only 56 seconds apart
to add to the lead, and Fields put the exclamation mark on the
period with his second of the game, the eventual game-winner, at
18:41 of the middle frame.
Worcester State fought back in the third period with five goals,
led by three goals and an assist from Tom Ford (Shrewsbury, Mass.),
but Franklin Pierce tallies by Woodring (his first career) and
Schneider helped to keep the Raven lead comfortable throughout the
final 20 minutes of play.
Freshman netminder Jeremy Rossignolo (Rochester,
N.Y./Springfield Pics) stopped 17 of the first 18 shots he
saw to help the Ravens to a huge advantage early, and the freshman
held on to stop 27 shots in earning his first collegiate victory in
his second start. For Worcester State, Jason Richardson (Perkasie,
Pa.) allowed seven goals in the first two periods before ceding the
net to David Schultz (North Andover, Mass.), who stopped 15-of-17
shots in the final frame.
Franklin Pierce (1-2-0, 0-1-0 ECAC NE) will return home to begin a
four-game homestand on Wednesday night, when the Ravens battle
Assumption College at 7 p.m. in a non-conference game at the
Winchendon School Ice Arena. Worcester State (0-4-0, 0-1-0 ECAC NE)
will take on Western New England College in an ECAC Northeast
contest Thursday at 7:10 p.m.
