Casey Goodell tallied a pair of goals on saturday at Salve Regina.

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (November 3, 2007) – Sophomores Casey Goodell (Rochester, N.H./Laconia Leafs) and Phil LaBreck (Thornton, N.H./Laconia Leafs) each scored twice, but the Franklin Pierce University men’s ice hockey team dropped a 7-5 decision to Salve Regina University in a season-opening non-conference game on Saturday afternoon at the Portsmouth Abbey Ice Rink.

Goodell and LaBreck tied for the team lead with two points, as did junior Coursen Schneider (Stony Point, N.Y./Avon Old Farms), who recorded two assists. Junior Jeff Kasper (South Boston, Mass./Catholic Memorial) also scored a goal for the Ravens in the first period.

The Seahawks took control early by jumping out to a 3-1 lead after one period, as Conor McCahill (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch) scored twice and Tyler Trott (Rehoboth, Mass./Tilton School) added a goal for the home team. Stempniak got the Ravens on the board at the 11:34 mark with his first career tally, notching a power-play goal off the sticks of Schneider and freshman Sean Woodring (Rogue River, Ore./Eugene Generals).

Each team found the net three times in a back-and-forth second period, as the teams alternated goals throughout. LaBreck began the scoring with an unassisted tally, the first of his career, only 2:14 into the period. After Joe Colaianni (Monroe, N.Y./Hotchkiss School) scored the first of his two second-period goals for Salve Regina, Goodell struck for his first of the period with an unassisted power-play tally at the 12:14 mark.

The Seahawks came right back, however, as Mike Mallette (Johnston, R.I./Mount St. Charles) scored 25 seconds later to regain the two-goal advantage. But the Ravens continued to fight back, as Goodell turned another power-play opportunity into a goal, only 20 seconds into the man advantage.

Phil LaBreck

Phil LaBreck scored twice on Saturday at Salve Regina.

Colaianni scored the eventual game-winning goal at the 15:25 mark off the stick of McCahill, who tied with Trott and Mallette for the game high with three points. Trott and LaBreck then each scored their second goals of the game in the final period.

The Ravens’ special teams looked impressive in the season-opener, as the visitors converted on three of their six man-advantage opportunities and held the Seahawks scoreless on three power plays. Franklin Pierce scored at least three power-play goals on two occasions last season, the last coming against Worcester State on Nov. 13.

Franklin Pierce also outshot Salve Regina on the day, holding a 36-28 edge, including a 27-17 advantage over the final two periods. Chase Goodrich (Salisbury, Vt./Proctor Academy) earned the victory by making 31 saves for the Seahawks, while Spencer Utman (Brockville, Ontario/SUNY-Canton) stopped 21 shots for the Ravens.

Franklin Pierce (0-1-0, 0-0-0 ECAC NE) will play its first game at its new home, the Winchendon School Ice Arena, on Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. as the Ravens host Curry College in their 2007-08 home and ECAC Northeast Conference opener. Salve Regina (1-0-0, 0-0-0 ECAC NE) will travel to Stonehill a week from today to take on the Skyhawks.
