WINCHENDON, Mass. (January 19, 2008) – Junior Conor McCahill (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch) scored the game-winning goal 1:55 into overtime as Salve Regina University outlasted the Franklin Pierce University men’s ice hockey team by a score of 4-3 in an ECAC Northeast Conference contest on Franklin Pierce men’s hockey Alumni Day Saturday night at the Winchendon School Ice Arena.

McCahill’s seventh goal of the season came just 30 seconds after Raven freshman goaltender Jeremy Rossignolo (Rochester, N.Y./Springfield Pics) made a diving stop on a shot from freshman Ryan Petersen (Shrewsbury, N.J./Avon Old Farms) that could have ended the game. After the subsequent faceoff, McCahill corralled a loose puck in front of the Franklin Pierce net and stuffed it past Rossignolo for the game-winner.

Petersen had a goal and an assist for the Seahawks, as did senior Mike Mallette (Johnson, R.I./Mount St. Charles). Joe Colaianni (Monroe, N.Y./Hotchkiss School) added a goal for Salve Regina, while Patrick Bambery (Braintree, Mass./Kents Hill School) recorded a pair of assists.

Franklin Pierce sophomore Casey Goodell (Rochester, N.H./Laconia Leafs) led all skaters with two goals, notching his second-multi goal game of the season overall and against the Seahawks. Freshman Eric Spalt (Barnstable, Mass./New Hampton School) also scored his fourth goal of the season for the Ravens.

In goal, Rossignolo made a season-high 30 saves on 34 shots for Franklin Pierce. Salve Regina netminder Chase Goodrich (Salisbury, Vt./Proctor Academy) stopped 28-of-31 shots to earn his team-leading third victory of the season.

Salve Regina came out hot in the first period, scoring on two of its first three shots to take an early two-goal advantage. Petersen began the scoring only 2:18 in, as Bryan Russell (Essex Junction, Vt./Tilton School) found Peterson alone in the slot and the forward buried a wrist shot into the top left corner on the team’s first shot of the game. Less than four minutes later, Mallette walked in alone after a pass from Bambery and rung the puck off the inside of the right post and in.

Franklin Pierce came back, however, with two goals of its own to knot the game at two after 20 minutes. Goodell notched his first of the night on the power play after a great individual effort by junior Jeff Kasper (South Boston, Mass./Catholic Memorial), who took the puck end-to-end and fired a shot that Goodrich turned away, but Goodell was there to sweep in the rebound at the 9:24 mark. The team then converted on its next power-play opportunity, as Spalt raced in from the right point and wristed home a cross-ice pass from senior captain Joe Fields (Towamencin, Pa./Green Mountain Glades).

After Colaianni gave the Seahawks a one-goal edge 4:47 into the second period, Goodell recorded his second of the game only 1:49 later, this time with help from senior Ryan Strayer (Murfreesboro, Tenn./Enfield (Conn.)). Strayer stole the puck from a Salve defenseman in the Seahawk zone and then fed a wide-open Goodell, who fired a wrist shot short-side to once again tie the score.

Both teams had opportunities in the third period but neither team could find the back of the net, setting the stage for McCahill’s overtime game-winner.

Franklin Pierce (4-13-0, 0-3-0 NE-10, 2-7-0 ECAC NE) will take to the road for the first time in over three weeks a week from tonight at 8:30 p.m. against conference opponent Nichols College. Salve Regina (5-8-2, 3-4-1 ECAC NE) will take on Johnson & Wales University next Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
