WINCHENDON, Mass. (November
7, 2007) – Junior defenseman Jarrett Sousa
(Providence, R.I./Merrimack College) had two assists and scored the
eventual game-winning goal 1:13 into the final period as the Curry
Colonels held off the Franklin Pierce University Ravens by a score
of 5-3 in a hard-fought ECAC Northeast men’s ice hockey game
on Wednesday evening at the Winchendon School Ice Arena.
Sousa was one of three Colonels to record a goal and two assists
on the evening, as Jeffrey Hazelwood (Dublin, Calif./St.
Norbert’s College) and Ross Enmark (Shelby Township,
Mich./Alpena Icedogs) also posted three points for the visitors.
The Raven attack was led by senior tri-captain Pete Wilson
(Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield), who recorded his first
career multi-goal game with a pair of power-play tallies.
Curry came out strong to begin the first period, as James
Pentecost (Marquette, Mich./Soo) took a wrist shot from the left
point that eluded Ravens freshman goaltender Jeremy
Rossignolo (Rochester, N.Y./Springfield Pics) high to the
blocker side at the 5:21 mark.
After Enmark scored less than two minutes later on the power play,
Franklin Pierce took advantage of three Curry penalties in the span
of 1:32 to get the home team back into the game. At the 10:12 mark,
Wilson notched his first of the year while the Ravens held a 5-on-3
advantage, as he took a shot from the slot that found its way past
Curry netminder Zachary Cardella (Spokane, Wash./Trailsmoke). Only
52 seconds later, junior Jeff Kasper (South Boston,
Mass./Catholic Memorial) notched his second goal in two
games, taking a pass from the left corner off the stick of freshman
Sean Woodring (Rogue River, Ore./Eugene Generals)
at the right post and tipping it home.
After the Colonels scored the only goal of the second period off
the stick of Allen Mihai (Trumbull, Conn./Bay State Breakers) to
regain the lead, the final 20 minutes featured plenty of goals,
scoring opportunities and penalties.
Jeremy Rossignolo made 28
saves in his collegiate debut on Wednesday against Curry. |
Sousa began the frame with his
first of the year 1:13 into the period, but Curry had to fight off
a rash of penalties to escape with the win. The visitors were
called for seven penalties in a span of 5:07 midway through the
period, including their second too-many-men penalty of the night
and a bench minor for unsportsmanlike conduct. As a result, the
Ravens were on the power play for a majority of the final 10
minutes of play, but the team could only manage one goal by Wilson
in that time, who scored his second 5-on-3 goal of the night off
the sticks of sophomores Casey Goodell (Rochester,
N.H./Laconia Leafs) and Phil LaBreck (Thornton,
N.H./Laconia Leafs).
With the power-play tallies by Wilson and Kasper, the Ravens have
scored six man-advantage goals in its first two games of the
season, the highest two-game total for Franklin Pierce since the
team combined for six against Southern New Hampshire and Saint
Michael’s on Feb. 18 and 25, 2006.
In the third period, Franklin Pierce outshot Curry, 17-10, and
held a 38-33 edge in shots on goal for the game. Cardella came up
big for the Colonels by making 35 saves, while Rossignolo made 28
stops for the Ravens in his first collegiate appearance.
Franklin Pierce (0-2-0, 0-1-0 ECAC NE) will return to the ice on
Monday at 7:30 p.m. with a non-conference matchup with Worcester
State College in Auburn, Mass. Curry (1-0-0, 1-0-0 ECAC NE) takes
on Fitchburg State at home on Tuesday evening.
