Salve Regina Rallies Past Franklin Pierce, 4-3

Seahawks use balanced efforts to earn fifth victory of the season

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (January 14, 2007) - The Franklin Pierce men's ice hockey team suffered a tough 4-3 setback to Salve Regina University in ECAC Northeast Conference action this evening at the Portsmouth Abbey Ice Rink.

Salve Regina used a balance offensive attack as 12 different skaters collected points in the victory. Junior Mike Mallette (Chepachet, R.I./Ponaganset), freshman Brandon Goodnow (Holden, Mass./Worcester Academy) and classmate Tyler Trott (Rehoboth, Mass./Tilton School) all posted goals to lead the Seahawks, while senior Bryn Sneddon (Casper, Wyo./Kelly Walsh) netted the game-winning goal. .

Sophomore Matt Whitney (Plymouth, Conn./Hartford Jr. Wolfpack), classmate Coursen Schneider (Stoney Point, N.Y./Avon Old Farms), and freshman Casey Goodell (Rochester, N.Y./Laconia Leafs) each registered goals for Franklin Pierce, while junior Joe Fields (Lansdale, Pa./Green Mountain Glades) while senior Chuck Matthews (Needham, Mass./Bridgton Academy) chipped in with one assist each.

Franklin Pierce came out firing with an early 2-1 lead in the first period as Whitney and Schneider combined for two unanswered goals in a 5:18 span midway through the frame. Salve Regina responded late in the first when Goodnow connected for his first collegiate goal at the 18:36 mark.

In the second period, Franklin Pierce increased its lead to 3-1 on Goodell's second goal of the season, but Salve Regina rallied with three unanswered goals in the third period to earn its fifth victory of the season. Trott ignited the rally for the Seahawks with his second goal of the year at the 2:30 mark, before Mallette and Sneddon sealed the victory with back-to-back goals in a 0:22 span midway through the final period. 

Salve Regina junior Chase Goodrich (Salisbury, Vt./Proctor Academy) totaled 26 saves to earn his fourth victory of the season. Franklin Pierce junior goaltender Spencer Utman (Brockville, Ontario/SUNY-Canton) matched a season-high, posting 39 saves despite the loss.

Franklin Pierce (4-8-2, 1-3-0 NE-10, 1-5-2 ECAC NE) will be in action again on Saturday as it hosts Nichols College at 4:30 p.m. Salve Regina (4-9-1, 2-3-0 ECAC NE) will travel to Assumption College on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
