DelSavio breaks three program records in final career game

HOOKSET, N.H. (February 24, 2007) - Fourth-seeded Southern New Hampshire University defeated fifth-seeded Franklin Pierce, 4-2, in first round action of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament at the Ice Den this evening.  

Junior Dominic DiMarzo (East Boston, Mass./UMass-Boston) led the Southern New Hampshire attack with four points on two goals and two assists, while classmate Brandon Hammermeister (Calgary, Albert/Fernie Ghostriders) added one score and three helpers. Senior Ethan Porter (Chino Hills, CA/Salem Ice Dogs) was also solid, totaling three points on one goal and two assists.

Senior captain Brian DelSavio (Orangeburg, N.Y./Pearl River) led the Franklin Pierce charge with two goals for two points, while classmate Chuck Matthews (Needham, Mass./Bridgton Academy) and junior Peter Wilson (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) chipped in with one assist each. With his two goals, DelSavio became the program's all-time career leader in goals (34) and points (67), topping former teammate Matt Clemente's old marks of 33 and 66 respectively. His 14 goals this season also rank first among all-time single season holders.

Southern New Hampshire jumped out to an early 3-0 lead as it collected three unanswered goals in a 2:54 span midway through the first period. Hammermeister started the rally for the Penmen with his 19th goal of the season at the 6:35 mark, while DiMarzo capped the rally with a pair of goals, including the game-winner at the 9:29 mark.

In the second period, Southern New Hampshire increased its lead to 4-0 just 0:41 into the period has Porter connected for his fourth goal of the season off assists from DiMarzo and Hammermeister. Franklin Pierce countered midway through the frame as DelSavio tallied a power play goal off a dish from Wilson.

Franklin Pierce tallied a late third period goal on DelSavio's 14th score of the season, but sophomore goaltender Matt Courchesne (Bow, N.H./Exeter Seawolves) posted 13 saves in the third period to clinch the victory for Southern New Hampshire. Courchesne finished with 35 stops for the Penmen, while junior goaltender Spencer Utman (Brockville, Ontario/SUNY-Canton) stopped 27 shots for the Ravens.

Franklin Pierce concludes its season with an overall record of 5-17-2, a 1-4-0 mark in the NE-10 and a 1-12-2 mark in the ECAC Northeast.  Southern New Hampshire (12-13-1, 3-2-0 NE-10, 10-7-0 ECAC NE) will travel to top-seeded Saint Anselm College for the tournament semifinals on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
