DiMarzo, Carroll and Hammermeister shine in Penmen victory

WINCHENDON, MASS. (February 17, 2007) - The Franklin Pierce men's ice hockey suffered its fourth consecutive loss, dropping a tough 6-1 match to Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 Conference action this evening at the Robinson-Broadhurst Arena.

Southern New Hampshire used a balanced offensive attack as a trio Penmen recorded a game-high three points. Junior Dominic DiMarzo (East Boston, Mass./UMass-Boston) led the Penmen charge with two goals and one assist, while classmate Brandon Hammermeister (Calgary, Albert/Fernie Ghostriders) registered one score and two helpers. Sophomore Dave Carroll (Arlington, Mass./Bridgton Academy) paced the Penmen offense with a game-high three assists.

Freshman Joe McCarthy (Whitman, Mass./Boston Jr. Blackhawks) notched the lone Franklin Pierce goal, while senior Chuck Matthews (Needham, Mass./Bridgton Academy) chipped in with an assist.

Southern New Hampshire opened the scoring early in the first period as junior Chris Gunn (Wethersfield, Conn./Hartford Jr. Wolfpack) connected for his eighth goal of the season off an assist from freshman Thomas Ohlson (York, Maine/Bridgton Academy).

In the second period, Franklin Pierce fired back with a quick score by McCarthy at the 5:54 mark, but Southern New Hampshire rallied off four unanswered goals to take a 5-1 lead into the third period. DiMarzo ignited the Penmen rally with his first score of the game at the 8:28 mark, while junior Evan Williams (Gilford, N.H./Holderness School), freshman Matt Farley (Halifax, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) and Hammermeister followed with one goal apiece.

DiMarzo sealed the victory for Southern New Hampshire midway through the third period as he tallied his 19th goal of the season off assists from junior Josh Goodman (Highland Mills, N.Y./Peterborough Jr. Bees) and Hammermeister.

Southern New Hampshire out-shot Franklin Pierce 38 to 21 in the contest. Sophomore goaltender Matt Courchesne (Bow, N.H./Exeter Seawolves) posted 12 saves in two periods for the Penmen, while junior goaltender Spencer Utman (Brockville, Ontario/SUNY-Canton) recorded 32 stops for the Ravens.

Franklin Pierce (5-15-2, 1-4-0 NE-10, 1-11-2 ECAC NE) will be in action again tomorrow as it hosts Plymouth State College at 7 p.m. Southern New Hampshire
(10-13-1, 3-2-0 NE-10, 8-6-0 ECAC NE) will host Suffolk University on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
