Saint Anselm Cruises Past Franklin Pierce, 10-2

Dobler, Ohlson, and Smith total four points apiece in Hawk victory

MANCHESTER, N.H. (January 9, 2007) - The Franklin Pierce men's ice hockey team suffered a tough 10-2 setback to Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference action this evening at the Sullivan Arena.

Senior Brian Dobler (Jericho, N.Y./Apple Core) led the Saint Anselm offensive attack, posting four points on a game-high three goals and one assist. Classmate Brett Smith (Hudson, Mass./Canterbury School)  also collected four points on one goal and three assists, while senior Dan Ohlson (York, Maine/N.H. Jr. Monarchs) paced the Hawk offense with a game-high four assists.

Sophomore Ed Kus (Webster, Mass./Norwich Ice Breakers) and junior Ryan Strayer (Murfreesboro, Tenn./Enfield) led the scoring drive for Franklin Pierce with one goal apiece, while sophomores Shane Murphy (Tolland, Conn./The Gunnery School), Matt Whitney (Plymouth, Conn./Hartford Jr. Wolfpack) and Coursen Schneider (New York, N.Y./Avon Old Farms) each chipped in with an assist.

Saint Anselm opened the scoring early in the first period as junior Mike Foley (Medford, Mass./Philips Andover Academy) connected for his third goal of the season just 1:52 into the match. Midway through the period, Smith added his fifth goal of the year to give the Hawks a 2-0 advantage.

Franklin Pierce responded with a quick score just 1:34 into the second period as Kus found the back of the net for his first goal of the season. Strayer also tallied a second period goal for the Ravens, but Saint Anselm connected for three scores to take a 5-2 advantage heading into the third period.

In the third period, Saint Anselm exploded for five unanswered goal to secure its fifth victory of the season. Dobler led the Hawk's attack with two goals in the period, while junior Pat Froshner (Natick, Mass./Avon Old Farms), sophomore Brian Hartigan (Saugus, Mass./Salisbury Prep.) and senior Mike Curtis (Hanover, Mass./Boston Bulldogs) added one goal apiece.

Saint Anselm out-shot Franklin Pierce 41 to 22. Freshman goaltender Jason Zuck (Clifton, N.J./N.J. Hitmen) posted 17 saves for the Hawks, while junior goaltender Spencer Utman (Brockville, Ontario/SUNY-Canton) stopped 26 shots for Ravens.

Franklin Pierce (4-7-2, 1-3-0 NE-10, 1-4-2 ECAC NE) is back in action on Sunday as it travels to Salve Regina University at 4:30 p.m. Saint Anselm College
(5-5-1, 2-0-0 NE-10, 3-3-1 ECAC East) will host Trinity College on Friday at 7 p.m.
