Plymouth State Blanks Franklin Pierce, 8-0

Shields earns first career shutout with 25 saves

WINCHENDON, MASS. (February 18, 2007) - The Franklin Pierce men's ice hockey suffered its fifth consecutive loss, dropping a tough 8-0 match to Plymouth State University in ECAC Northeast Conference action this evening at the Robinson-Broadhurst Arena.

Plymouth State captain, senior Goose LaCroix (Moretown, Vt./Green Mountain Glades) and junior Pat Turcotte (Goffstown, N.H./Green Mountain Glades led the Panthers offensive attack, posting four points each, on two goals and two assists. Senior Nate Gardner (Topsham, Maine/Laconia Leafs) and junior Ryan Moreau (Worcester, Mass./Hoosac) each added three points with a goal and two helpers, while senior Steve Milley (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) chipped in with two points on one goal and one assist.

Plymouth State opened the scoring midway through the first period as LaCroix and Milley connected for back-to-back goals in a 1:01 span. Moreau gave the Panthers a 3-0 advantage heading to the second period as he added his fifth goal of the season at the 18:34 mark.

In the second period, Plymouth State tallied two more goals to take a commanding 5-0 lead. LaCroix started the rally with his ninth goal of the season, while freshman Chris Chambers (Crofton, Md./Boston Harborwolves) collected his team-leading 17th goal of the year.

Plymouth State added three more unanswered goals in the final period to clinch its tenth victory of the season. Turcotte ignited the three goal explosion with two goals throughout the frame, while Gardner iced the game with late goal in the final minutes.

Franklin Pierce was out-shot 53 to 25 in the contest. Plymouth State freshman goaltender Erik Shields (Lebanon, Maine/Alpole Express) collected 25 saves to earn his first career shutout, while junior Steven Moore (American International) and freshman Jie Blauner (Brattleboro, Vt./Salem Ice Dogs) combined for 45 saves for the Ravens.

Franklin Pierce (5-16-2, 1-4-0 NE-10, 1-12-2 ECAC NE) will be in action next Saturday as it participates in the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. Plymouth State College (10-12-2, 9-4-1 ECAC NE) will travel to Western New England College on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m.
