Franklin Pierce Rolls Past Becker, 8-2

Fields becomes all-time single season leader in points; Matthews leads Ravens to fifth victory of season with a game-high four points 

WINCHENDON, MASS. (January 31, 2007) - The Franklin Pierce men's ice hockey team earned an 8-2 victory over Becker College in non-conference action this evening at the Robinson-Broadhurst Arena.

Franklin Pierce senior Chuck Matthews (Needham, Mass./Bridgton Academy) led all scorers, finishing with a game-high four points on two goals and two assists. Senior tri-captain Brian DelSavio (Orangeburg, N.Y./Pearl River) was also solid, posting three points on two goals and one assist, while freshman Casey Goodell (Rochester, N.H./Laconia Leafs) added two scores.

Junior Joe Fields (Lansdale, Pa./Green Mountain Glades) chipped in with three assists in the Franklin Pierce victory. With his three points, Fields became the program's all-time single season leader in points with 24 total points. Last week, the junior forward also became the all-time single season leader in assists with his 15th assist of the season.

Freshman Joe Dorney (Williamsburg, Pa./Hudson Valley Eagles) led the Becker College attack, registering two points on one goal and one assist. Freshman Keith Dube (Monson, Mass./Springfield Pics) also added a goal for the Hawks, while classmates Derek Stabile (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich./Northern Michigan Black Bears), Mike Caprio (Valencia, Calif./Northern Michigan Black Bears) and Kevin Switek (Philadelphia, Pa./Hudson Valley Eagles) each chipped in with an assist.

Franklin Pierce opened the scoring just 3:29 into the match as Matthews connected for his first goal of the game off assists from junior Ben Reynolds (Wallingford, Pa./Green Mountain Glades) and sophomore Kyle Kruse (Bourne, Mass./Bourne). Becker fired back late in the period to knot the score at 1-1 as Dorney collected his first collegiate goal at the 16:45 mark.

In the second period, Franklin Pierce exploded for three unanswered goals to take a commanding 4-1 lead. DelSavio ignited the Raven rally with his first goal of the game, while Goodell netted a pair of goals including the game-winner at the 13:56 mark.

Franklin Pierce increased its lead to 6-1 as DelSavio and junior Peter Wilson (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) combined for two scores in a 1:30 span midway through the period. Becker added a goal two minutes later on Dube's fourth of the season, but Franklin Pierce freshman Rob Perretta (Staten Island, N.Y./Brockville Tiki's) and Matthews added two more scores to clinch the victory for the Ravens.

Franklin Pierce out-shot Becker 44 to 27. Junior goaltender Steve Moore (Londonderry, N.H./American International) finished with 25 saves for Ravens, while freshmen Anthony Oliveira (Stratham, N.H./New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs) and Rick Odria (Coral Springs, Fla./Exeter Seawolves) combined for 36 saves for the Hawks.

Franklin Pierce (5-11-2, 1-3-0 NE-10, 1-8-2 ECAC NE) will be in action again on Saturday as it travels to UMass Dartmouth at 4:30 p.m. Becker College (2-14-2) will travel to Assumption College next Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
