Worcester State Holds Off Franklin Pierce, 8-6

Perreault notches a game-high six points to lead the Lancers

WINCHENDON, Mass. (Jan. 25, 2006) - The Franklin Pierce Ice Hockey team suffered a tough 8-6 loss to Worcester State College in ECAC Northeast Conference action tonight at the Robinson-Broadhurst Arena. Lancer sophomore captain Nathan Perreault (N. Smithfield, R.I.) led all scorers, totaling a game high six points on six assists while classmateJosh Morgan (Mountaintop, Pa.) notched four points on two goals and two assists

Franklin Pierce jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as junior Chuck Matthews (Needham, Mass./Bridgton Academy) registered his fourth goal of the season off an assist from senior tri-captain Mark Gibbons (Quincy, Mass./Archbishop Williams) at 10:56 into the first period.

Worcester State quickly equalized, as junior Dan McLaughlin (Medford, Mass.) netted his sixth goal of the season just 33 seconds later. The Lancers would close out the period with a goal at 19:26, as sophomore Ed Achilles (Horsham, Pa.) found the back of the net to give the Lancers a 2-1 advantage heading into the second period.

Worcester State quickly capitalized in the second frame as junior Chris Krawczyk (Marlboro, Mass.) registered his first goal of the game off feeds from Perreault and Morgan just 0:51 into the period. McLaughlin and Krawczyk each added another goal to give the Lancers a 5-1 lead mid-way through the second period.

Franklin Pierce rallied late in the second period as sophomore Joseph Fields (Lansdale, Pa./Green Mountain Glades) recorded his eighth goal of the season. Three minutes later, junior Trevor Clark (Randolph, Mass./Randolph) added his first goal of the season off an assist from freshman Brian Bator (Erie, Pa./Pittsburg Jr. Penguins) to cut the Worcester State lead to 5-3.

Worcester State tallied three more goals during the third period, but Franklin Pierce would not go quietly. Ravens sophomore Ben Reynolds (Wallingford, Pa./Green Mountain Glades) notched two goals in the period for the third time this season to keep the Ravens in the game. Junior Brian DelSavio (Orangeburg, N.Y./Pearl River) also notched a goal late in the third period, but the three goal explosion was not enough as Worcester State goaltender Jason Richardson (Perkasie, Pa.) made 23 saves in the third frame to secure the win for the Lancers.

Franklin Pierce out shot Worcester State 59 to 37 as Ravens goaltender Rob Arduini (Fulton, N.Y./G Ray Bodely) stopped 29 shots in net. Richardson notched a game-high 53 saves for the Lancers.  

Franklin Pierce (1-13-3, 0-9-2 ECAC NE, 1-3-0 NE-10) will take the ice again on Saturday as it travels to Assumption College at 7:30 p.m. Worcester State College (2-14-2, 2-7-0 ECAC NE) will also be in action on Saturday as it travels to Framingham State College for a match starting at 1:30 p.m.
