Three early goals lift Seahawks past Ravens in ECAC NE competition

WINCHENDON, Mass. (Jan. 14, 2006) - The Franklin Pierce Ice Hockey team suffered a tough 5-3 loss to Salve Regina University in ECAC Northeast  Conference action tonight at the Robinson-Broadhurst Arena. Sophomore Mike Mallette (Chepachet, R.I./Walpole) and senior Joseph McDonald (Randolph, Mass./Catholic Memorial) led all scorers, as each totaled two points. Mallette notched two goals, while McDonald assisted with two helpers.  

Salve Regina jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and out shot the Ravens 12-4 after the first period.Senior Peter Collins (Shrewsbury, Mass./St. John's) opened the scoring for the Seahawks, just 5:17 into the game off feeds from classmates Timothy O'Neil (Hamilton, N.Y./Valley Warriors) and Lachlan Burgess (Hanson, Mass./Xaverian Brothers). Junior Ryan Cole (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) and senior captain Joe Piekos (Medford, Mass./Arlington Catholic) also notched goals in the first period to give the Seahawks the early edge.

Franklin Pierce would end the scoring drought early in the second period, as sophomore Ben Reynolds (Wallingford, Pa./Green Mountain Glades) notched his first goal of the game off a power-play just 3:49 into the period. But, Salve Regina would answer five minutes later as Mallette notched his first goal of the game on a Seahawks power-play .  

Franklin Pierce opened the third-period with some hot shooting, as the Ravens scored back to back goals and cut the Salve Regina lead to 4-3. Reynolds registered his second goal of the game just 2:23 into the period and junior Chuck Matthews (Needham, Mass./Bridgton Academy) added another goal five minutes later.

With 30 seconds left in the game, Salve Regina's Mallette added an empty net goal to secure the win for the Seahawks off an assist from MacDonald.

Salve Regina out shot Franklin Pierce 52 to 25 as senior goaltender Robert Arduini (Fulton, N.Y./G Ray Bodely) made 47 saves in net for the Ravens. Freshman Chase Goodrich (Salisbury, Vt./ Bridgton Academy) stopped 22 shots for the Seahawks.

Franklin Pierce (1-10-3, 0-6-2 ECAC NE, and 1-3-0 NE-10) will take the ice again on Wednesday as it hosts Wentworth Institute at 7 p.m. Salve Regina (5-7-2, 3-2-1) will be in action again on Tuesday as it hosts Assumption College at 8 p.m.
