Franklin Pierce Cruises Past Nichols, 7-2

Clark nets two goals, Ravens set program mark for wins in a season

WINCHENDON, Mass. (Feb. 20, 2005) - The Franklin Pierce ice hockey team collected a 7-2 victory over Nichols College tonight in ECAC Northeast competition at the Robinson-Broadhurst Arena in Winchendon, Mass. With the win, the Ravens set a new program mark for wins in a season, with six. The previous mark of five was set last year.

Freshmen Trevor Clark (Randolph, Mass./Randolph), Joseph Fields (Lansdale, Pa./Green Mountain Glades) and Ryan Strayer (Murfreesboro, Tenn./New England Jr. Coyotes), along with sophomores Chuck Matthews (Needham, Mass./Bridgton Academy) and Brian DelSavio (Orangeburg, N.Y./Pearl River) registered two points apiece, as 11 Ravens recorded points. Clark netted two goals, while Fields, Strayer, Matthews and DelSavio totaled one goal and one assist apiece. The sophomore duo of Mark Shinder (Los Angeles, Calif./Bay City Bombers) and Nathan Hucker (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Jr. Blues) connected on both Bison goals, with Shinder netting them both.

Franklin Pierce posted five consecutive goals and never looked back. Clark got the hosts on the board just 13 seconds into the contest, setting a new program record for the fastest game-opening and period-opening goal. The Ravens took a 2-0 lead, when Matthews found the net in the ninth minute of the first period, and Strayer tallied at the 18:00 mark to give the hosts a three goal cushion heading into the first intermission.

Fields took advantage of a power-play chance 30 seconds into the second frame and, freshman Peter Wilson (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) notched his first collegiate goal 5:57 later to push the Raven lead to five goals. Nichols ended the shutout bid 10:07 into the second period on Shinder's first goal but trailed 5-1 after two periods.

DelSavio extended the Ravens lead back to five goals at the 5:31 mark of the third period on a power-play goal. Shinder used a power-play opportunity to cut the lead to four goals, but Clark tallied with less than three minutes remaining in the contest to cap off a 7-2 victory for Franklin Pierce.

Nichols out-shot the hosts 33-32, but Ravens junior goaltender Robert Arduini (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) was solid in net, saving 31 shots en route to the victory.  Sophomore Ryan Davis (Detroit, Mich./Toledo Ice Diggers) started the game between the pipes for the Bison. He surrendered three goals on ten shots before giving way to junior Derek Newcomb (Nashua, N.H./New England College). Newcomb stopped 18 shots and allowed four goals in the final two periods of play.

Franklin Pierce (6-14-2, 1-3-0 NE-10, 5-9-1 ECAC NE) will wrap-up their regular season slate on Wednesday, as they host Saint Michael's College in a Northeast-10 clash beginning at 7 p.m. Nichols (4-17-2, 2-11-2 ECAC NE) has completed their regular season slate.
