Johnson and Wales Breezes Past Franklin Pierce, 4-1

McGilvary's four points lead Wildcats past Ravens

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (JAN. 12, 2005) - The Franklin Pierce ice hockey team suffered a 4-1 setback to Johnson and Wales University in ECAC Northeast competition tonight at the Rhode Island Sports Center in Providence, R.I. Freshman Matt McGilvary (Rochester, N.H./Laconia Leafs) figured in on all four goals for the Wildcats, scoring two and assisting on two more.

McGilvary got the hosts on the board just 2:45 into the contest, when he took advantage of a power-play opportunity to score his first goal of the game. The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the eighth minute, as freshman Adam Frew (Concord, N.H./Laconia Leafs) scored a short-handed goal on assists by classmates McGilvary and Tyler Bickford (Concord, N.H./Laconia Leafs).

Both teams went scoreless until McGilvary registered his second goal of the contest at the 8:01 mark of the third period. Senior Florian Roth (Nuremburg, Germany/Fredonia State) iced the game 26 seconds later, when he took feeds from freshman Ryan Jacobs (Derby, Vt. Laconia Leafs) and McGilvary to give the Wildcats a 4-0 cushion. Junior Shawn Dooley (Rockland, Mass./Archbishop Williams) notched the lone Franklin Pierce goal on a power-play late in the game, but it was not enough, as Johnson and Wales earned a 4-1 victory.

The Franklin Pierce offense was stifled by the Wildcats team that out-shot the visitors 37-15. Sophomore Sean Hershman (Clifton, Va./Reston Raiders) saved 14 shots en route to his second victory of the season, while junior Dennis Millman (Billerica, Mass./Kimball Union) took the loss in net for the Ravens despite saving 33 shots.

Franklin Pierce (4-7-0, 3-6-0 ECAC NE) will take the ice again on Sunday, when they play their second of three straight road games versus ECAC Northeast Conference foe Salve Regina University at 4:30 p.m. Johnson and Wales (5-6-2, 4-1-0 ECAC NE) begins a three game road trip on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. versus non-conference opponent SUNY-Cortland.
