UMass-Dartmouth Hands Franklin Pierce 6-3 Setback

N. DARTMOUTH, MASS. (Feb. 8, 2003) - The Franklin Pierce men's ice hockey team suffered a 6-3 loss to UMass-Dartmouth in ECAC Northeast Conference hockey action this evening at the Hetland Arena.

Junior Chris Dussault recorded a goal and dished three assists for a game-high four points to lead the Corsairs. Junior Scott Gallagher netted a pair of goals while classmate Shawn Sheehan registered a goal and an assist in the win.

Juniors Ed Farinato (Medford, Mass./Bay State Breakers) and Derek Mandatori (Newton, Mass./Newton North) and freshman Matt Clemente (Middletown, N.J./Laconia Leafs) all posted markers despite the loss.

UMass Dartmouth drew first blood in the first as Clemente was hauled off at the 3:01 mark for high sticking and the Corsairs capitalized on the power play with a goal from junior Matt Beck just 20 seconds later.

The Corsairs tacked on another marker with the man-advantage after freshman Dan McLaughlin (Medford, Mass./Boston Harbor Wolves) was called for hooking at the 5:28 mark of the first. Gallagher netted his ninth of the season from Dussault and Sheehan at the 7:06 mark to make the score 2-0.

The Ravens finally answered as Clemente converted passes from freshman Robert Pendola (Everett, Mass./Mass Mariners) and Tim Randall (Amesbury, Mass./Boston Jr. Blackhawks) to close out the first.

Gallagher helped the Corsairs take back the two-goal lead just a 1:26 into the second stanza, but Mandatori cut the lead in half with a tally from junior Alex Volovick (Everett, Mass./Mass Mariners) and sophomoreJason Pierce (Maynard, Mass./Nashoba Regional) at the 8:38 mark.

Dussault then netted what would prove to be the game winner midway through the second, as UMass Dartmouth would add two more goals in the third to make the final, UMass Dartmouth 6, Franklin Pierce 3.

Freshman Dennis Millman (Billerica, Mass./Kimball Union) turned away 39 shots in 60 minutes of work for the Ravens. Sophomore Kevin McGowan made 13 saves for the Corsairs for the win.
