Stonehill Stops Franklin Pierce, 9-2

Flemming nets two and dishes one assist to lead Chieftains to third-straight win

WINCHENDON, MASS. (Feb. 19, 2003) - Stonehill senior and all-time leading scorer, Brendan Flemming, netted a pair of goals and dished one assist to lead the Chieftains to its third-straight Conference win in a 9-2 victory over Franklin Pierce in ECAC Northeast Conference men's ice hockey action at Robinson Broadhurst Community Rink this evening.

Junior Brendan Ready added a goal and two helpers, while senior Mike Ryan chipped in two goals. Junior Rob Pascale, sophomore John McCourt and freshman Brian Lewis also posted a goal and an assist in the win.

Junior tri-captainMike Sabini (New Paltz, N.Y./Newburgh Polar Bears) and freshman Dan McLaughlin (Medford, Mass./Boston Harbor Wolves) both netted markers in the third period for the Ravens.

The Chieftains dominated from the very start of the game, as McCourt rifled a blast from the left point past Franklin Pierce freshman, Dennis Millman (Billerica, Mass./Kimball Union) four minutes into regulation. Stonehill's second goal came midway through the opening period as Lewis beat a crowd of defenders to take the two-goal advantage.

The Chieftains began to run away with the game with two unanswered tallies three minutes later as Ryan netted back-to-back markers in a span of five minutes to take a commanding 4-0 lead heading into the break.

The Ravens held off the Chieftains throughout most of the second stanza, but Stonehill tacked on three markers in the final five minutes of the period to put the game out of reach.

Stonehill goaltender, Phil Graves recorded his third-straight victory in net, stopping 25 shots for the Chieftains. Millman made 14 saves in 16 minutes in net before giving way to junior Andy Tinti (Buffalo, N.Y./SUNY Canton) who made 19 saves.

Franklin Pierce (0-20-1, 0-15-1 ECAC NE) closes out the ECAC Northeast Conference regular season on Saturday when it travels to intra-state rival, Southern New Hampshire University for a League game at 3:30 p.m. Stonehill (10-11-0, 8-7-0 ECAC NE) next hosts Lebanon Valley in a Conference game on Saturday.
