PREVIEW: Men’s Golf Returns to NCAA Regionals for Fourth Straight Season

RINDGE, N.H. (May 5, 2021) The no. 3 regionally-ranked Franklin Pierce University men's golf team will make their fifth overall and fourth straight appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament Atlantic/East Regionals Thursday morning at the Lake View Country Club in North East, Pa.

The Ravens completed their spring season finishing lower than third only one time. They are just a couple of years removed from a National Championship Appearance after they placed second and were one stroke away from capturing the regional championship.  Five of the eight slots in the East region were Northeast-10 Conference programs.

 

SCOUTING THE RAVENS

Pierce kick-started their spring year at the Hartford Invite a tournament that was comprised of all NCAA Division I golfers they took home fourth place (311, +23) which would be the lowest they finished all year. In the three-team Granite State Spring Opener, FPU placed second at 301 (+17). Once the calendar hit April FPU picked up the pace collecting a second-place showing, a third-place showing, a first-place head-to-head victory at Saint Anselm and a program-best second-place finish at the NE10 Championship.

 

HOW THE RAVENS LINEUP

Franklin Pierce will head to the Erie area with the following five-golfer lineup. Three of the five golfers who competed in the Regionals the last time will make a return trip postseason play this time at the Lake View Country Club, a par 72, 6,883 yard course.

 

1. Graduate student Sam Myers (Colchester, Vt.) – Tee Times: 5/6: 1st Tee, 10:40 a.m., 5/7: 10th Tee, 9:40 a.m., 5/8 TBD

Myers, a four-time regional participant collected a medalist honor at the Granite State Spring Invitational shooting a 70 (-1) through one round. He placed fifth at the Bentley Spring Invitational (149, +7) and at the Saint Anselm Spring Invitational (150, +8).

 

2. Graduate student Liam Donohue (Vernon, Conn.) – Tee Times: 5/6: 1st Tee, 11:10 a.m., 5/7: 10th Tee, 9:30 a.m., 5/8 TBD

Donohue, an NE10 All-Championship Team honoree makes his fourth trip to the Atlantic/East Regional. The fifth year student played some of the best golf of his collegiate career this spring tying for second at the Hartford Invitational, a field that consisted of Division I golfers at 73 (+1). He tied for fourth at the Franklin Pierce Spring Invite (76, +5) and deadlocked for fifth at the NE10 Championship (152, +8) for the All-Championship Team selection.

 

3. Senior Dylan Plis (Camillus, N.Y.) – Tee Times: 5/6: 1st Tee, 11:00 a.m., 5/7: 10th Tee, 9:20 a.m., 5/8 TBD

Plis makes his third trip to the Atlantic/East Regionals and he competes from the three slot. The upperclassman took part in every tournament for the Ravens this spring and notched back-to-back top-two finishes, a tie for second at the Saint Anselm Spring Invitational (147, +5) and first at the Franklin Pierce Spring Invite (71, E).

 

4. Freshman Thomas Hickey (Moultonbourough, N.H.) – Tee Times: 5/6: 1st Tee, 10:50 a.m., 5/7: 10th Tee, 9:10 a.m., 5/8 TBD

 Hickey is one of two underclassmen making the trip to regionals. The newcomer shined in his collegiate debut at the Granite State Spring Invitational (73, +2) for a share of third place and then a few weeks later tied for eighth at the Franklin Pierce Spring Invite (79, +8).  

 

5. Sophomore Michael Sosik (Fiskdale, Mass.) – Tee Times: 5/6: 1st Tee, 10:40 a.m., 5/7: 10th Tee, 9:00 a.m., 5/8 TBD

Sosik rounds out the five golfer lineup for the Crimson and Grey. He joined Donohue on the All-Championship Team finishing the conference championship as the runner-up at 148 (+4). The week before at the Franklin Pierce Spring Invite he tied for fourth with a 76 (+5) scorecard. At the Granite State Spring Invitational, Sosik had a share of fifth at 75 (+4).
