C.J. Konkowski Falls in Sudden Death Playoff as Golf Finishes Third at Spring Invitational

Konkowski ties for first place following 36-hole tournament; falls on first hole of sudden death playoff

KEENE, N.H. (April 7, 2012) -- The Franklin Pierce University golf team shot a 27-over-par, 315, on Saturday during the final round of the 2012 FPU Spring Invitational to finish in third place out of five teams. The Ravens finished with a two-round total of 646 (+70), as their second round score was 16 strokes lower than the 331 posted during Friday's opening round. The invite was held at the Bretwood Country Club and its North Course in Keene, N.H.

The highlight of the day for the Ravens was the performance on freshman golfer C.J. Konkowski (Chesterfield, N.H.), who fired a final round 76 (+4) to finish in a tie for first place after the 36-hole tournament. Konkowski's four-over, 76, came just one day after he fired a three-over, 75, in the opening round. His two-round total of 151 (+7) was tied with UMass-Lowell's Sylvain DeBiais' 151, as the duo went into a sudden death playoff to determine a winner. DeBiais sunk a 15-foot putt for birdie on the first playoff hole to earn a well-deserved victory. Konkowski's stellar performance came on his home course, which he has played all of his life since taking up the game of golf.

UMass-Lowell's "A" team, which DeBiais was a part of, shot a 312 (+24) during the final round to secure a first-place finish in the tournament. The River Hawks' top team shot a two-round score of 613 (+37). UMass-Lowell also placed a "B" team in the event, which finished second with a two-round total of 641 (+65). That River Hawk squad totaled a 28-over-par, 316, in the final round. Saint Michael's placed fourth with a 679 (+103), including carding a final round 336 (+48). Franklin Pierce's "B" team finished in fifth with a 698 (+122) after shooting a second round 353 (+65) on Saturday.

Several of the remaining four members of Franklin Pierce's "A" team had nice bounce back days in the second round. Senior co-captain B.J. Powers (Southbury, Conn.) responded from a first-round 86 with a final round of 76 (+4) to notch a 162 (+18) to finish in a tie for 10th place. Classmate and co-captain Brian Fleckles (Sandwich, Mass.) tied for 13th with a two-round score of 165 (+21). After scrambling to shoot an 87 on Friday, Fleckles turned in a solid round of 78 (+6) on Saturday.

Junior Ian Landry (Loudon, N.H.) placed 15th after carding a two-round total of 168 (+24). He shot a second round 85 (+13) on Saturday. Sophomore Adam Spencer (Jericho, Vt.) tied for 22nd with a 179 (+34), after shooting a second round 91.

Franklin Pierce's "B" team was led by junior Ricky Gray (Jaffrey, N.H.), who tied with Fleckles for 13th. Gray fired an 81 (+9) on Saturday and sported a two-round score of 165 (+21). Freshman Stewart Wise finished in 18th with a 32-over-par, 176, after he carded a final round score of 90 (+18). Classmate Matthew Bardsley (Orange, Mass.) tied for 19th with a two-round score of 177 (+33), including shooting a final round 89 (+17) on Saturday. Freshman Mike Alario (Ashburnham, Mass.) and junior Jeff Gloshinski (Worcester, Mass.) both tied for 24th with identical scores of 182 (+38). Gloshinski shot a 93 (+21) in round two, while Alario fired a 95 (+23).

Franklin Pierce returns to action on April 14-15 when the Ravens compete in the River Hawk Invitational at Meadow Creek Golf Course in Dracut, Mass.
